Before switching to vaping I was using a hot box herbal vaporiser with cherry pipe tobacco. If tar is a concern then vaporisation of whole tobacco leaf isn't the answer. After one 50g pouch the hose needed to be replaced due to the build up tar / oil in the hose (which chemically attacked both medical grade silicone, and food grade pvc).

Whatever you were getting in the hose it was not tar as tar is a product of combustion. Flavored pipe tobacco is often heavily cased with sugar and flavorings, so that may be an issue. I am not familiar with the hot box herbal vaporizer so don't know what issues that may have caused, but with true HnB there is certainly no tar.

I saw this article, never heard of these things. Apparently they are a new design of an older product from BT.

What Is a Heat-Not-Burn Cigarette and Can It Help You Quit?

While its good from harm reduction point, it wouldnt feel the same for people smoking, without the smoke.
Also, i dont know what kind of heat is applied, but at some point, pyrolysis (chemical transformation due to heat) would turn tobacco alkaloids, sugars added and the ammonia added into formaldehyde. Also, other tobacco alkaloids are already carcinogenics like nornicotine.

Regarding 'bold' - I think you got that backwards - the THR aspect of Premiere predates ecigs. Their newer products are a different issue.

As for the "quotes" of a comedy writer in a movie, we don't know what was actually said, and I'm not sure if RJR ever made the actual surveys available. (I looked :)

While tobacco industry was already researching those harm reduction products for a while, the pressure from ecigs is making it go faster.
With no competiton they could just bribe government and stay on.

Here in Brazil Ecigs were prohibited on 2009. Anyone who wants it can get, thru contraband, however, the official prohibition denies the possibility of establishing a healthy market, and attract much more customers. Even in this situation, vaping is getting strong.
Meanwhile, gov issued a law prohibiting menthol cigarettes. Somehow using legal shenanigans tobacco managed to nullify the law.
