I use 91% isopropyl alcohol about once a month when cleaning my Novas and ce2s. It's basically the only alcohol I have and Everclear is not available here.

I wash the wicks under warm running tap water and then let them soak in the alcohol. Then I put them in a glass and cover them with about an inch with distilled water above any metal part. I set a saucer on top of the glass and microwave everything for 4 minutes. The alcohol is flushed, diluted, and evaporated. Then I dry burn. This is probably over-kill for the cleaning but it works for me.

Again, this is for special cleanings when things are starting to wick slowly. Usually I just rinse the wicks with tap water and dry burn.

You microwave the heads? I just microwave the water and then drop in the heads.

Yeah, I usually wait until I have 3 or 4 to do at the same time. The Nova heads are quite small but the Fluxomizers are quite tall so it`s important to have an inch of water over them so there is no "Lightning Storm" in the oven.! Lol

I got me some CHEAP vodka, like 3 bucks for a pint. Works great and I feel better about using this over alchol. Although I can't believe anyone actually drinks this junk. I took one shot just for fun, terrible idea.

Well you did buy cheap vodka.
Cheap Vodkas have flavoring in them and my not work as well Everclear or grain alcohol.

Most regular grades of vodka are only 40% alcohol, so there is 60% of something else in there (most of that is water, I believe). It still shouldn't be a problem but the purer the alcohol is the less of something else you have to rinse out.

no, the best thing ever to clean heads is to make a hillbilly friend and get some good old fashioned 200 proof 'shine

EverClear is as close to pure as you can get, but I agree 200 proof 'shine would be good. The problem is confirming the purity. My father taught me to check with a spoonful. Touch a flame to it and allow it to burn completely. The stuff that's left over isn't fit to drink!

Edit: I should have said my Pappy! Lol

So I was gonna ask, where would one buy Everclear, when I run into this on wikipedia:
190-proof
In the United States, it is illegal to sell 190-proof Everclear in California, Florida,[3] Hawaii,Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nevada,[4] New Hampshire, North Carolina,[5] Ohio, Virginia, and West Virginia.

Do you guys just go to a liquor store and ask?

190 proof is legal in Texas. You can get 151 proof in California.

I keep passing on this tip but so far it does not seem anyone has tried it. - denture cleaner.
Denture cleaner works beautifully! It work better than alcohol. Much better.
Put your atty in a small cup with a tablet and cover with boiling water. about a 1/3 cup of water is fine.
Let your atty sit for a couple of hours. I like to do over night.
You will see all the junk from your atty in the bottom of the cup and your atty will look new.
rinse your atty well. no "minty after taste". no smelly alcohol. Its easier to find than PGA and much cheaper.

No its not safe! Period....they add a component to rubbing alcohol to make it unsafe for human consumption otherwise the winos would be in the local drugstores buying .99 cents bottles and drinking it.

Wrong. Sorry. ISO is more poisonous than PGA is, so you shouldn't drink it. Large amounts are harmful since it isn't metabolized well. However, medical grade ISO used for sterilization is fine to clean an atty with.

To the OP: Safe. Let it dry out. It evaporates away 100% without any residue. That's why they use it as a cleaning solution on electrical contacts (like computer motherboards and stuff). I use it frequently when hot water is insufficient.

Note that the ingredients should say "Isopropyl Alcohol and distilled water" AND THAT'S IT. Get the 91% stuff. Blow it out real well to dry the wicking.

Also note that some concoctions sold as "rubbing alcohol" are for muscles and have other stuff like oils in them. That's not the ISO you asked about. Don't use that other stuff.

You got it. Just walk in and ask for "EverClear" That's what I've been using for all my atty's. 1 pint is about $8.00 in Oklahoma and it goes a LONG way.

Well I learned something else I didn't know. Thanks AttyPops.
