I suspect the 5v limitation on pass-throughs protects your computer should you use that to plug in. A single USB port has a 5v limit on it, whether it's USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 (if I remember correctly).
If you do plug it in to a computer, use a USB 3.0 port on it if you have one. It will be blue rather than black. It puts out 1A rather than the 500mah on USB 2.0
