I just listened to the replay of the VP Live interview with Bruce from COV. Very short, but informative. Bruce just does not seem to be able to clearly express himself. The one thing that did become clear is that the 20 he said he had for sale at Vape Bash were people who had requested refunds sometime between the preorder & VapeBash. So 20 people ordered Ithaka at Preorder then backed out. These are what he was selling at Vape Bash. That was totally unclear during the weekend communications on ECF, FB wherever. Had that been made clear, I think everyone would have been fine with that. But that was not clearly communicated.
Next the thing about staying up all night fighting with customs to get Ithaka released from customs. That has been stated many times. I didn't know customs was a 24 hour service. Can anyone else confirm?
Next unclear statement, their team in Florida was working on shipping out Ithaka while Bruce & Justin were in Chicago, but he also said they had brought the Ithakas to Chicago with them. Which is it. Again very unclear communication.
What this all boils down to is lack of communication. No Clear Communication!
The customers, not having a clear understanding of the facts felt as if Bruce & Jason had turned their backs on us. Bruce and Jason felt that their customers had turned their backs to them.
All it would have taken is to have said:
1) Ithaka held up in customs
2) Ithaka released from customs, we now have them.
3) 20 Ithaka preorders from December have backed out of the presale and we have refunded them their $. These 20, which are now unspoken for, we are taking to Chicago to show off and sell.
4) Anyone from Chicago that preordered can pick up their Ithaka from us at our table. Anyone going to Chicago Vape Bash from around the country can pick up Ithaka from us at our table. (Does anyone have any communication of this?)
5) We left 'X' amount of Ithaka in Florida & our team is working on packaging and shipping these to preorder customers. These will be given to the Post Office on Monday after we account for the ones picked up in Chicago.
If this had been 'clearly' communicated to the preorder customers, I know I would not have had any problem whatsoever with this. Would anyone else have had a problem with this?
As we all know this is not what happened. The half communications, the unclear communications, left both COV and their customers feeling disrespected and ignored & filling in the blanks with their own quesses. The result is history.
The lesson in all of this is transparency. Full disclosure and full communication. Never assume the other side has all the facts. They just do not. Restate clearly & often what is going on.
I now feel Bruce & Jason were trying their best to do what they considered to be the best for all concerned. But that did not get across to the customers.
We are all vapors & need to hang together as a community. But that can only happen when we work together to openly, honestly, with a willingness to be clear and support each other. We truly are all in this together.
I hope we can all take the lessons from this experience and apply them to the future of our beloved hobby.
