I started smoking when I was 13 years old (thought I was cool.) I continued to "think I was cool" for 28 years. I always would go smoke, come back into work and listen to the non-smokers complain that I smelled bad. I would tell them that it was all in their head and I didn't smell any worse than they did, god was I lying to myself!!!

Today I had a customer walk into my office, he came in from just having a cigarette. I literally started dry heaving in front of him. He smelled so bad it literally almost made me vomit!!!! I didn't want to offend him so I told him that I just ate and didn't feel very good and had to excuse myself. It was probably one of the worse thing's I have ever smelled in my life (worse than my kids' diapers)

Anyone else have this same problem?

... Sorry, to me, a reformed smoker means that they know where they can't smoke!

Being close to a year 'bakky free, I don't mind the cig waft. It's the ashtray odor that is repulsive...

I was offended that my co-worker fired up a smoke in the work truck today. He was puffin RYO tobacco, and Gawd that was a horrid smell! I try not to be one of THOSE former smokers and/or non-smokers, because, hey, I was THAT guy not too long ago, but I'ma hafta say something if the guy can't at least hold it near the window.

Oh, how soon we can forget our own 'transgressions'. C'on folk, almost all of us have been 'dere'. Being a b*tch with balls (or whatever) isn't gonna foster a positive image of vaping. "Geeze dude (dudette), if your vaping causes this reaction, then it's not fer me." Ummm... no outreach in dat!

I work with co-workers who all smoke. We will all be together outside the office or in the warehouse area and the smokers will all being tokin away and I take my pv with me. I am only 2 months in and still smells the smell of the cigarette and want to turn and ask for one. I will be the first to admit I liked smoking better than vaping (blasphemy I know) What vaping did was make it possible for me to quit though. I have not caved, I have not buckled. I have not waivered nor will I while i can vape. it sorta feels like the fat kid on a diet eating a salad and watching everyone else eat cake really.

However a few days ago for the first time I was in home depot and some guy was in the hardware aisle while I was looking at some organizers and he smelled like he had hot boxed on right before he hit the door. I was like OMG. You smell like crap man. I didnt say a word to him and wondered how often I smelled like that and figured it was probably more often then I would have led myself to believe. I dont begrudge anyone who smokes infact i take it as a merit, I stand with them and puff away on my pv, if I can resist the urge while around them , there is zero chance of me going back when they're not.

I really don't mind the smell still. In fact, one of my favorite bars to drink at is a cigar bar where they allow cigarette smoking too (one of the only places like that around). To me, it is the taste of cigarettes that I realize I can't stand after I started vaping. I think it is mostly due to the chemicals added to cigarette tobacco. There was a Modern Marvels on the History Channel all about tobacco that said that most cigarettes only have about 50% tobacco leaf in them, with the other 50% being comprised of stems and reconstituted tobacco (which is where they add all the ancillary chemicals).

The smell and taste of cigars and pipe tobacco is a completely different story. My great-grandfather smoked his pipe until the day he died (at 99 years old) and even as a child I always remembered the smell fondly. I still go out and vape with the smokers in between classes just because I enjoy their company, and really the smell doesn't bother me, even after vaping for a month an a half and cigarette free for over two weeks. Just my 2 cents.

cigarette smoke actually takes my breath away, now. If I am riding in a car with someone and they are smoking..I just roll my own window way down so I can at least get some fresh air.

I definitely don't harp on them for smoking or anything but its a very uncomfortable feeling when you feel like you can't breathe...so I gotta do what I gotta do. The smell is also really strong but I can get past that.

I smoked for 23 years (I'm only 36!) and I had my last cigarette 4 months ago. I am now extremely sensitive to the smell of smoke, but I realized that I am sensitive to the smell of everything because my nose is working properly again :) I am a veterinary technician and I work extremely close to and with clients on a daily basis (I mean to the point where we can be nose-to-nose in order to hold a dog down). I am embarrassed just thinking of how they had to smell the remnants of my habit. Even though the stale smoke/ashtray smell is now on my top 10 list of unpleasant odors, (right there with some of the foulest animal smells I have to deal with daily, lol), I refuse to be a naggy, nasty ex-smoker type of person because I have had my share of dealing with the negativity surrounding my (ex)habit. I wasn't exactly proud of the fact that I smoked, but it was what it was and it's over now. I was always very respectful of those around me who didn't smoke and I always excused myself to go puff away in my own little corner. I now find that if I am around people who smoke, I am quite capable of either vaping right along with them, or excusing myself so they can do what they need to do :)

I will say that the one thing I will miss about smoking is the smell of a freshly lit cigarette on a warm summer night...That was one of my favorite smells for a long time.

I think the point was we don't condemn anyone for smoking, but we are surprised now how bad the lingering smell it leaves on a person...something we never noticed when we were smokers, too.

And my point was that if a vaper is "offended", then I think he/she needs to back off and put the situation into a realistic perspective. In other words, don't let our 'salvation' and dislike for the our ol' habit get in the way of a positive image to encourage others to embrace the 'freedom' we've found.

Dougiestyle, in retrospect, I apologize if it appeared that I was attacking you. Please believe me, I wasn't! It's just that it's all too easy to become a zealot due to our beliefs. Sadly, I too, am guilty at times... as evidenced by my first response...
