There are very few mods that are only tung oiled only cocobolo being one of them but that doesn't mean you cant have a cocobolo mod if you live were the humidity is high . I live in Maine and are summers are hot and humid and I have two cocoblolo mods . One has to take better care of his mod is all twice a year put a coat of oil on your mod inside and out and your all set . As long as the mod is treated moisture cant get in . Its not like the mods going to fall apart its one piece of wood if it swells a bit not a big deal bring it into the ac it will be fine

As for which mods have poly most of them do and a couple like ebony and rosewood have lacquer .
The mods that are not polyurethaned will be labeled oil finish . There are some people that dont like a polyurethane finish they prefer a natural oil finish. I can understand this there is nothing like a mod finished extra extra smooth with a natural finish . Its extremely soft and enjoyable to hold and I put a glass finish on a mod when I no its getting a oil finish . Actually I try and do it to all of them but you can tell on a oil finished mod you can feel the grain .
The average person is attracted to a poly finish because of the shine and it really does bring out the beauty in a wood product . But if they ever held a hard wood mod with a natural finish they would no what they were missing .

my first Woodvil is a cocobolo.

like i have said before, if you find anything that feels as good to hold in your hand, you should probly marry it.

I did a bunch of them this run in natural oil that are just a smooth as cocobolo blood wood -jatoba-utele I love a natural finsih on a mod . But on the other hand the look of a good poly finish on a mod is hard to beat . I guess I love both options

Humidity is definitely not unique to south Florida. But other places rarely get as much consistent, wood-mod-ruining humid heat pretty much year round as us swamp rats in several pockets of south-east CONUS. Even close to the city/coast (I live in the burbs about 3 miles from the coast, stupidly humid all year). We'll get MAYBE, if we're lucky, get a full month of winter-ish weather. That's when northern folk make fun of us for wearing sweaters and jackets in 50 degree weather.

The smooth feel of the cocobolo was definitely delightful. Plus it looked classy as hell. But the fact the ebony has a poly coat is great news, as that was the kind of wood I was aiming for. So yay!

(I keep referring to the 18490 cocobolo in past tense, as if it didn't exist. Kay is presently enjoying the crap out of it, surely.)

EDIT: don't know where I got poly on ebony from

Roger that, you could put a poly finish on a fine wood or some plywood or MDF and they would all feel exactly the same with poly ........ Boooooo

I like to feel the wood :D

I feel like I should go do something MANLY now after typing that ...... Off to skin a buck with a piece of flint.

What specific oil do you recommend for us to use on the oil finish mods to protect them, Rob?
Tung would be best but you can use something like Howard's feed in wax .
I think he said Ebony will be a lacquer finish.
yes that is what I said poly wont dry on ebony and tung oil turns the finish to mud on ebony

How long does your battery last on your 18490? Seems battery would outlast 3 ml bottle?
On the fence between 18650 and 18490. :)
Thanks for any input.

Rudy I have seen you inquire about the battery life before.

It is tough for most of us to say because we use multiple REO's throughout the day.

The AW IMR 18650 with 1600 mAh, and the AW IMR 18490 with 1100 mAh. There are several factors that will figure into the length of time for the battery and the juice.

If you run a RM2 you will see more juice usage and also quicker battery depletion. The ohm of your coils are a certain factor also.

What are you now using? Just one REO or PV? What is your juice use in a day?

Maybe we can help you figure out the difference between the two if we have enough information.

I know I have been maybe unneccarily hung up on the battery life vs. juice consumption issue and making people crazy!
I use my metal mini for out of house and mini woodvil in house. I use rm2 on my road mini. 1.3 ohms. A battery will typically last me 3-4 hours and a little more than half a 3ml bottle. A 3ml bottle will just make it thru a 8 hour work day. Trying to figure out if I should just go with the full size woodvil so I need not carry extra batteries/bottles. Seems the 3ml would not last me thru the life of 1 of the 18490 batteries so I would need to carry extra juice. I guess I just want it all, long battery life, lots of juice, and small size!!! :)
I've pretty much decided I'm going after a 18650 Woodvil since I already have a mini woodvil when I want to go somewhere and need a stealthy pocket friendly device. Plus having the big boy adds to my REO family variety! :)

Well the 18650 will give you more than twice the battery life of the 14500. If you are going through 3ml in 8 hours the battery and juice should run out about the same time with a 18490. Of course I pull my batteries out before they quit. Usually about 3.7 so that is what I am using to compare.

I understand that having it all in a small package is your wish. But really I think you would quickly get accustomed to the Woodvil. It should last you a good long time before changing battery and adding juice.
