I laughed too, and I get some of your points. But for me, I can't seriously ignore the fact that essentially, it IS an electronic cigarette - whether it looks like a tobacco cigarette or not.

Why call it something else out of fear that it will be banned?

I can't imagine trying to explain to someone what it is without mentioning the words 'electronic' and 'cigarette'.

Actually the first name for it was "Ruyan". It's the Chinese generic term for "like a cigarette"
It's the most recognizable way of calling it. But a cigarette contains tobacco and needs to be lit, it has a burning process, so there is a fundamental difference in my view. A forum in The Netherlands actually changed its name from "esigaret forum" to "vaporizer society"...

Smokey Joe will remember this well .. one of the first threads posted here, when I joined in January, had to do with "what do we call this thing we do?" There were qualms even then about the phrase "e-smoking," that we were really inhaling vapor, not smoke, and the whole "smoking" phrase would get us in trouble. But "vaping" was co-opted by druggies, so that was dismissed. As I recall, we all just gave up. The process had a name by the time we found it. We weren't going to be able to change that name.

I think that's still true.

As mentioned, many newbies discovering our process want something that looks and acts like a cigarette -- an electronic cigarette. If they wanted a vaporizer, they'd search Google for one. So I think we're stuck with terms we have in play at the moment.

The way to change it? Widespread national advertising and promotion. Is it illegal to advertise these? If not, Ruyan could sell Winky Dinks on network TV each evening and in a full-page spread in the New Yorker. Then let Target sell Njoy electronic cigarettes if they like.

Winky Dink and You was a Fifties TV show -- and the name my mother gave the family dog. I just pulled that out of mid-air from somewhere while writing.
