Gold ... do you have any helpful hints or tips for me? :D ... I already removed the ss tank and replaced it with the frosted one so I can get to work on it .... but I'm scared

Don't be scared gold is my middle name.
This is my bagua gold shade:
8HBHqnq.jpg

I did torch it but I have also blued (or golded in this case:)) metal in da oven. Time and temp effects color. Different alloys may blue/gold differently. If the gold looks disgusting invite Karate Kid over for a wipe on wipe off; now is is silver again.

I suggest:

Don gloves.
Wash gloves.
Wash SS tank in detergent/rinse.
Wash tank in dish soap/rinse.
Wipe tank w/ acetone or rubbing alcohol.
Put in easy bake oven at 350F for 15min.
Remove, cool inspect.
Still silver...hmmm...easy bake oven 400F 15 min.
Still silver..easy bake 450F 15 minutes.
Still silver...ok..easy bake max temp...say 550F 15 min.
No..ok 550F 30min...that color has to be changing by now.
Oooppssy...it is getting blue..what is Karate Kids number again.

Or the quicky:

Clean dat sucka off and torch it nice and easy for 2 mins.
Allow to cool inspect color.
Torch 3 mins, allow cool, inspect.
Gold is the first color.
If torch heat isn't even then color will not be even.

What I'm trying to say is you have to sneak up on the gold color and not over shoot. Likely goes from silver to light gold (mine) to a kinda ugly dark gold (subjective) to shades of blue, purple, dark greys etc.

emus you are the best, that is what I needed  ... I was gonna try to torch on the stove, but I like this oven baked idea better. The gold on your Bagua is nice ... I am aware that after gold comes purple, then blue, that is why I am nervous to do it ... and Nikki doesn't have any wet/dry for wax on/wax off.

I can do this ... Thank you luv. :)

Gold turns into a bronze color, then into orange(ish), purple, blue, red........

I tried baking my Nemesis in the oven. Even set at 500F it didn't get hot enough to change the color (the oven's kinda crap though). I used the toaster oven after that, and it got a tiny bit of color, but not enough. I know one guy that put his right near the opening where the flame comes out, and that worked really well, gave his a nice even color.

This is my Poldiac that I cooked in my BBQ on high. Took about 30 mins. I forgot to do the other pants though... :(

The absolute BEST way to do it is in an electric kiln with a digital thermostat. I found a really awesome one on eBay for $300 free shipping that I wanted to get soooooooo bad, but I just can't afford it ATM.

IMO, this is WAY better than brass. This doesn't need constant polishing and the color seems to last a long time (polishing will likely fade it though).

Thank you, I appreciate the info ... that Poldiac is looking yummy too. I die for the Poldiac in 350 mode. :)

I've got a Poldiac clone from slowtech. It's not bad, but it does need some TLC to get it working well.

The metal disk that is the face of the button will almost surely fall off by itself within a few days.
Consider that a good reason to disassemble the switch completely, and replace the tiny little steel pellet
with a ever-so-slightly thicker piece of solid copper wire.

This took mine from a slight disappointment to a DAY-UM this thing WORKS! :)

Excellent guideline.
Does the guideline give a hot soak time recommendation?
My parts get darker w/ time at a given temp.
I don't have a kiln so I'm sure temp fluctuates as elements cycle.
Perhaps the part should be in a covered pan for more stable temp.

Oh. I just noticed those are the colors while at said temp. Not the color after cooldown. Maybe 1000F below is a good guide but not 1100F up.

Gas BBQ? Popular model? Charcoal?

Beautiful job on your mod BTW.

I gotta dumb question.

Is it safe to do this in a regular oven? I mean, I know squat about heating metals and what's chemically(?) changing.
What about....ehmmmm.....gasses? I'm not planning on doing anything, I'm still collating data.

Although....this now-useless PH22 (the first "Poldiac clone" that FT had, which looks nothin' LIKE a Poldiac) is sitting here
on my desk holding down some papers. I might just put the main body tube for this thing in the oven and see what happens.....

No idea if safe but I heat lots of stainless pans and wouldn't be surprised if some are China clones.

Well, even with that guideline it really is more of a try and see kind of thing.. seems to just be a lot of guess work. You're right about the color changing as it cools.. the Poldiac did get a bit darker as it cooled down. I also noticed putting things in water to cool immediately after heating dulled the color by quite a bit, so I don't do that anymore. I let it air cool.

Propane BBQ, nothing fancy, bought it used. I just kept an eye on it and made sure to get it when it was the color I wanted. But to be honest, I don't think it was going to get any hotter, so the color I got is probably the best it was gonna do. Which is why I'd like a kiln so I can experiment and get red and purple... but especially purple.

I'd rather have your grill than a kiln cause your mod looks perfect.
Plus I could cook steaks while vaping Podiac.

Having an epic vape mail shipment notification day.

Received the white stag notifcation on Sunday, now I have received shipment notification of my Black Copper Clone from a group buy made by Skorite (whoever that is). Can't wait to compare the BC to the Phantom Brass version from Tobeco.

Also received shipment notifcation of my hana modz v3 that I placed an order and paid for on 2/8 so its a good day for sure!

It's doing something strange now. The polished finish is starting to get spots all over it. I've never seen this before, so I'm not sure what's causing it.. I'll have to polish it, but I think I'll lose the color if I do.. but I gotta because it's looking a little grim right now. :(

My gold tone torched trim has held up well. It was polished before torch so may be more resistant to spots than a brushed finish. I have pocket carried w/o loosing the gold. Have cleaned w/ damp cloth and w/ dish washing soap. Anodized parts like to spot but clean up w/ soapy cloth. If your spots don't clean up you can always buff to silver and cook podiac w/ steaks on saturday.
