Wouldn't surprise me lol. Patents are needed I suppose, but they can also be abused and stifle innovation. (not saying that's the case here)

Actually they encourage innovation. They are they to prevent people from using a design someone else created. Thereby, forcing them to create new and innovative designs. 7's glass tanks are a perfect example. He built on an existing design to create something completely different. Whether it succeeds or not is still up in the air, but he took the risk in creating something different.

dark, it's one thing to make a mod for personal use, but any plans to sell it become a totally different thing.

The problem is the community is getting really big. Look at how many people are copying the look of Brad's Grip. And the whole notcigs trying to patent VV.

Patents are to protect one's hard work and design. The Lava tank isn't the only tank being made, it's the best, but there are many different styles of tanks being sold here on this forum.

I understand that you're not referring to the Lava Tanks by your post, DARK, just giving an example. This forum has many different types of mods that do basically the same thing but they ARE unique and original to the person that developed them.

Not when they are abused by patent trolls who just go around buying them up, hoarding them, and patent the most ridiculous things.

There are constant legal battles taking place regarding patents. Mobile phone company's seem to be the worst, or maybe they are just the most publicised.

Patents are being used to form monopolies, and that does stifle innovation, because if you so much as hint towards the design of something, the giants will crush you.

Just look at what Apple were doing with Samsung regarding the iPad and the Galaxy Tab 10.1

Software patents are also a prime example of where there needs to be reform.

Either way, just because you hold a patent, doesn't mean it can't be challenged and lost.

Again, just generalising here.

I hear that, and understand it on a personal level. But would it hold up to a patent challenge?

If the ming style tips are patented and possibly the regular tank fittings too, could the owners of those patents not have a right to be ...... at the lavatank?

I've got an awesome idea in my head for a mod (at least I think it's awesome lol) But it does borrow form other designs, while also being unique. I mean there are only so many ways you can do something. So I'd be gutted if I couldn't create it, or even possibly sell it in the future, because somebody has patented the "hole" or something equally ridiculous.

That's different. I think you should go for it. But what if you built a tank exactly like Arry's? And then started selling them. Would Arry be cool with that?

I did think it was funny that samsung makes the lcds for the new iPads. :)

Yeah, the irony of that killed me lol.

It's amazing how pride can go straight out the window when there is money involved. Personally I would have told Apple to stick it, get your screens else where. :p

I get what you are saying about patents but people seeing that other one immediately without provocation called it something very close to what these are called and laughed about it.......... now while that might not be telling because we both know it wasnt exact if you can tell it looks like a grip at a glace that might be a little too close to a grip...........if you dont want someone to call it a grip dont make it look like one! there are a bunch of wood mods but none really looks like another one they have thier own special look to them. Anyway nice to meet you Dark and hope none of this put you off we like new people really we do!

I actually think they are a total rip off. They must cost pennys to mass produce, and I see them being sold for £15!!!

I hate being ripped off, so I'm probably not the best person to ask about that particular product. :grr:

But I get your point, these 2 things look very alike, and it doesn't help the the name is so similar too, but is that name gonna stick? I think somebody said it as a joke.

And lots of things in this scene have similar names to show that they are a variation on something else.

I mean, how many ways can you make an all in one top that fits in a plastic tube?

I don't know, I think competition is always good for the consumer, and the best will win the day, due to it's own virtues.

Nice to meet you too :)

Not put off at all, it's quite interesting. I'm quite surprised I had so much to say about it. Who knew I had all this rattling around in my head? lol

Honestly, everybody I have spoken to in the vaping scene has been absolute amazing. :)

Which is really refreshing, because I'm involved in the games console modding scene, and 90% of the people there are total, total ........s lol. (not exaggerating.... at all)

I like games, but there are too many gamers that aren't as smart as they think, and have very limited social skills. That's a real bad combo.

So true. Doesn't help that most of them are kids. I could have a total rant about that, but that's way off topic lol.
