i know this is the wrong place, but you guys are my peeps now.... but i am faced with the decision as to wether or not i will have to have my pet euthanized..... she has a fatal, uncurable skin ailment, it will kill her, i can treat and extend her life a little... but sooner or later.. she will lose the fight... im not sure what to do. sorry for the depressing post, i have been battling this for a couple days..
Oh my goodness, I am sorry to hear that. We love our pets so. What is the Vet saying about the time she does have if extended. Will it be painful? Will she be able to do anything for herself, even feed herself. These are some of the things that I would want to know before making a decision. I am hoping your Vet and his workers can help guide you through this decision.

Man, sorry to hear this. If she/he "is" suffering help her by letting her go. Yes, it will hurt but it will hurt more knowing you made her suffer longer. If she isn't suffering I would do everything possible to keep him/her for as long as possible.

Without knowing exactly what type of sikin ailment it is ... If it were my pet, I would continue to treat the condition until it reached a point were the dog was no longer comfortable and then euthanize at that point.

i know exactly what it is, it will progress from its current state, into skin lesions, and eventualy death. it's not really a skin ailment so much as it is a internal/external fungal infection

I just went through that a month or so ago with my 13 year old Lab. It killed me to do it, but she was in too much pain. You have to make a decision if there is any quality of life. She can't make it herself. Also, I couldn't afford to treat an illness that couldn't be cured. It's a tough decision. But one you gotta make. I feel for ya.

exactly, i can afford to "treat" but it's not really treatment so much as managing symptoms, she has a deff prognosis, there is no deffinite cure, 0and her quality of life will decline... it's not a dog or cat, but my pet none the less.

Two months ago I had to sit here and watch our Boxer die. It was my husbands dog, he couldn't make the decision and I offered to take Him to the vet for him. Dozer suffered terrible for 5 days, nothing anyone could do, he had a hole in his heart. We knew from the time he was 1 yr old that he wouldn't be with us long. Against Vet's advice, when he had an attack, we would calm him. We were told to just let him alone, let him die. We couldn't do that. He lived 5 good years and my husband watched him die right in front of his eyes. He learned a lesson that will haunt him the rest of his life.

I thought I would share, maybe it will help ease you pain.

Well if she is in pain i would say let her go. If not try to keep her around as long as possible but just know it will be just as hard when she finally does pass and at that point it will be in your house so it will make it even harder.

Steve is it a bird. The reason I ask is that one of my birds had a fatal skin disease and eventually didn't make it. We were able to keep a good eye on her and treat her the best we could. I had the bird for couple of years.
it's a reptile, shes a bearded dragon, tons of personality, the sweetest lizard you could ever hope to meet. at most if i continue treatment shes got another couple months, since the first treatment didnt stick, now it's just symptom management, and quality of life stuff, i would rather keep her around, but my girl thinks its best to let her go.

Sorry Scuba, I should have been more clear. I meant that since I didn't know the condition was. I'm a vet tech and EAMT, so I tend to think "medically" first when I am making a decision.

Steve, if you have the money hold off on it and get a 2nd opinion from another Vet. To be honest i have seen to many doctors wrongly diagnose things and tell people they have such and such time to live and they really werent going to die. Vets do the same with pets. This would be my advice.

i sent a skin culture off to a lab to be tested, i should have results in a couple days. reptile vets are far and few between around here, so i am getting a second opinion. but i am prepared for the worst.

I think I would totally have to agree with this.

my second opinion from an independant lab is incoming, here in the next few days i should know something, then i will email those results to a reptile expert i know that lives across the state from me. i love my dragon, but i don't want her to suffer because i was too greedy to let her go

Steve, I feel your pain. I had a male boxer which I just adored. He came down with mass cell cancer. What I did was enjoyed him as long as I could, but when it was appearent that he was suffering, I had me put down. I didn't want him to suffer. You have a hard decision to make buddy and I wish you all the best.

Also, make sure the second opinion comes from a Vet with an extensive background in Reptiles.
