First genny (2nd rba) Vamo with Orbtronic 18650, RSST 4 wraps with 32awg to 2.2ohm, my first 500 SS mesh wick oxied on my stove.

I filed out the air hole a bit. Seems to vaping like a champ so far.

EDIT: Seems to taste a little metally, should I let it break-in? I've read soo much and watched a bunch of genny vids and I'm still such a noob....

a metallic taste is from a short. you coil looks nice though, so rip some vapes and see if it goes away. also, you may need to wash the atty if you havent already. could be some machine oil residue causing an off taste.

also, did you get the protected Orbtronics or the High Drain ones? high drain (IMR) is what you want.

Oh I definitely got the IMR High drain. What do you mean by "wash" it. Like under running water? I fully oxidized the top part of the wick, it's holding at 2.2 ohm.

I took the fill plug out to try to increase wicking. It's just this is very different from the clears I was using before, so I don't know what I'm going for. Hovering around 5-7 watts. Here's another pic I just snapped:

yep, wash all the atomizer parts with soapy warm water.

taking the fill screw out is what i do, although many builders are now accomplishing great wicking leaving it in. i wasnt able to accomplish this but perhaps in the future i will. it would sure be nice to make mine more pocket friendly.

anyway, did removing the fill plug eliminate your metallic taste?

Your coil looks good, I'd definitely give it a good rinse though if you haven't already. You can loosen the ground and just remove the wick then break the atty out and give it a good cleaning and reuse the same wick and coil. Shouldn't take long to get it broke in after that.

5-7 watts seems kinda weak but if you're getting an off taste probably don't want to go any higher till that's solved.

Same for me, and it still perplexes me. On my RSST, I can consistently get a good coil/wick that vapes wonderfully and consistently with no fill plug. Put the fill plug back in, and literally the 2nd hit is dry and metallic. Remove it, and it vapes like a champ again.

I, too, would love to be able to plug the fill hole so I didn't have the keep them upright all the time... but I've yet to learn the secret.

Thank you Kemosabe. *bows*

Seems a tiny bit better, will report back after I wash it out.

Excellent feedback/info, much appreciated. I did an initial rinse, but not with soap so I'll try that.

I ended up having to rebuild after taking the wick out, but I did it meticulously again, still tasting a little burnt....hmm. This is a challenging art form. Just not at nirvana yet with the flavor.

Are you oxidizing the wick before wrapping the coil? Heavily oxidizing can impart a slight metallic flavor until it 'breaks in'. Or you can use a bare stainless wick and the 'pulse method' and pretty much avoid that. To me, stainless wicks always taste a tiny bit metallic, but others love the 'pure' flavor. Different tastes, I guess.

The only reason I could think of for your getting a metallic taste is maybe a hot leg? Like, a section of coil that gets to glowing when you vape, because there's no juice vaporizing and cooling it down. I know that on my RSST, the distance from the negative contact and the wick makes for wicked hot legs, unless I keep the coil in contact with the deck right up to where it meets the wick. It seems, from your picture, that you've wrapped the coil coming straight up from the negative contact to the coil. So, since it's been a few months, I wonder how you're getting along with this. When you fire it, without the top cap on, do you notice that leg of the coil glowing? If so, that's a hot leg. If not, how did you accomplish that? I cannot, for the life of me, wrap a coil like yours without getting seriously nasty flavor from the hot legs.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Rba's!!!! They can be a pain but when you get it set up right it's awesome! For those times when it's being troublesome just pull out your gogo and appreciate a fantastic back up.

I started with an Orion with SS mesh and never really liked the mesh flavor, both oxidized and not. I used porous ceramic for a while and liked them but they were very fragile and prone to breaking while re wicking. I tried ekowool last weekend and its meh, can't keep up with chain vaping(I may have coiled it too tightly though). I'm going to try unoxidized SS mesh inside ekowool next.

I've heard/read good things about SS cable too.

your coil looks good but take a good, close look at it.. make sure that every part of that coil is touching your wick. Whenever I get a burnt or metallic taste, it's always because I have a part of the coil that isn't in complete contact with the wick. Right now I have a DID that has been vaping great for a week but I tightened the screw on the positive post and now, unless I tilt it and almost flood the wick, I'm getting a faint burnt taste. I looked at my coil and see the problem. I know what's wrong so it doens't bother me. I'll fix it when I'm not so lazy. I don't mind having problems that I know what they are and can fix. It's those problems that I can't figure out what's wrong that drive me crazy!
