Well, perhaps I chose the wrong forum seeking support on. I guess I'm wrong.

Next time I buy a car I guess I'll need to tear it down to nothing to make sure it was put together correctly, because that's my job as a consumer.

Look, I do understand running safe devices, but selling a sub ohm loaded atty without any kind of notice that the build is sub ohm is stupid on its own. I just thought of its put together from the manufacturer, it was okay to use, but I'm incorrect for thinking that apparently.

I'm not asking for someone to take responsibility for my health, or safety, but when my investment from them destroys my investment from somewhere else, then yes I have a problem with that.

Honestly, if I saw something prebuilt in a store, I would expect it to work. If it didn't work on certain equipment, I would expect someone to tell me that.
What if they sold this product to the average person and the battery blew up in their face? What would they say, "sorry about your face but you should have watched YouTube?"
I'm sorry this happened to you. The B&M store here has a strict no money back/return policy. It's one reason I won't buy any equipment from them.
If I were you, I would definitely invest in a cheap ego set up! Can you get one now just to get you by?

I understand your frustration, and no ones trying to make you feel bad or point blame on you, its just that RDAs are generally considered advanced devices, they require the user to know what their device can handle, what the build resistance is, etc.
Its not a clearo where you just pop it on and youre good to go. For that reason they are saying the shop shouldnt be held responsible, and I agree.
Mistakes happen, you didnt know, it is what it is. Nothing you can do but learn from the experience.
It would be in the shop's interest to tell buyers (if they put a build in it) that it really isnt ideal for a newer vaper and explain what is needed to run it however.
I havent been to a shop that puts their own builds in RDAs for sale, I dont think its a very smart idea personally for this exact reason. Most here have builders that will build it for you to your specs, but not just throw a build on attys for sale and put em in the display.

Sounds like your new year is starting as awesome as mine, 6 hours into the new year I break a tooth eating a Bacon sandwich.

Breaking a tooth is bad enough, but did it have to be associated with the greatest food on earth?
Yeah, it's been a blast so far haha.

I'm sorry to hear about your tooth, and your bacon, I think that might actually be worse than the situation I'm in currently lol.

That's all I was trying to make a point of. If the people selling this stuff don't know anything about it or what it is safe for, did anyone ever think, maybe they shouldn't be selling it? You know why I'm not a pharmacist? Because I don't know about pharmaceuticals.

The exact reason I dont think shops should put builds in attys on the shelf. Too many shop owners think because its a RDA, everyone purchasing it is an experienced dripper.
Here literally every shop will build FOR you to your specs but not throw random pre-builds on product, which is the way it should be IMO.
I have noticed a lot of shop owners dont actually know anything about vaping though, a lot dont vape period.

I'm not trying to hurt your feelings, hon, I'm trying to help you be safer (and not ruin your mod if the atty was the cause. I understand that as I can't afford expensive stuff either).

As for your car analogy: if you bought a car and had an accident on the way home, the dealer would be negligent if it were due to mechanical failure. If they failed to torque your lug nuts to the proper setting and a wheel fell off, that's on them. If you drive it recklessly, that's on you.

Did you tell them you didn't know anything about RDAs? Did you tell them what your mod could fire? Did you ask them if your battery was safe for the build? If you did and they told you, ah, don't worry, its all good, you have a legitimate complaint. If you didn't, you can't expect them to know what your plans were.

Sucks Brother. I hate to hear about your troubles and I really feel for ya. I'm not going to "dead horse" and say what everyone here has already said but I hope you're taking this gouge to heart. It is GOOD stuff.

Personally, I have very few B&M's that I trust (two), a few B&M's that aren't horrible but I don't think I'd buy expensive hardware from and a great, great many that probably would sell a bottle of pink-eye if they thought they could get away with it.

I wish I had a good answer, but I don't. It's the nature of the beast. Vaping is SUPRA-popular and as we, as a group, grow more pop-up storefront B&M's are going to appear. I most frequently visit FL when I'm back in the states and I feel like every time I come back there's at least two new VAPESHOPS in town. It's getting bad enough that I suspect you have to open a vapeshop before you're allowed to get a driver's license.

If you were down the street I'd absolutely float you a loaner until you were straight. If you want I could also loan you an atty with some .3ohm coils already installed (Too soon?).

Since everyone else already said most of the helpful stuff (the contacts on my 4Nine* were sketchy, but it fired like a champ after I cleaned the be-jesus outta 'em), I made a small list of inspirational sayings to help get you by. Careful though, ONE is definitely NOT inspirational.

1. It's always darkest before the dawn
2. When I get mad I stop being mad and be AWESOME. True Story.
3. YOU SHOULD TOTALLY BURN THAT PLACE DOWN!!
4. It's not always going to be easy, but it's always going to be worth it
5. Tough times don't last, tough people do

Did you spot the one that didn't belong?

Anyway. I hope I have not offended. I was just trying to cheer you up. Hang in there, brother. You'll get through this. This place will help.

Cheers

Where has all of the accountability gone? One of my favorite statements in the vaping world:

"Disclaimer:
Rebuildable atomizers are for the experienced vapers with access to multimeters and a working knowledge of how electronic devices work. Please ensure care is taken as to not cause damage/harm to the atomizer, vaping device, or yourself."

You paired an incompatible build (that you tested before firing) with something that couldn't handle it. The end result was warranted. Maybe the shop should have given you a "heads up", but it really is up to you, the user, to be responsible for your own safety, be it gear or otherwise.
Just be thankful your device failed where it should have and didn't blow up in your face. The good news is that you have 3/4 of everything you need in that fried box to start a DIY DNA 40 project.
And before it starts, I'm not dancing on your grave. Sorry for your loss. A lot of us have learned the hard way at one point or another.

Not offended, I appreciate the would be offering, and I think I've had my fun with pre builds.

This is all especially frustrating because every trouble I've had with the mods I've had trouble with, the seller does not want to take any responsibility, and I'll take responsibly when necessary, but when I spend good money on something, I expect it to work out of the box, sue me. I suppose I'm just in denial about living in a world of cheaply made, self destructive, garbage.

All I wanted to do today was blow some tasty clouds, instead my mod was the only thing smoking off of that setup.

Well I guess that disclaimer should be on the box, not on the internet.

Yeah, I don't listen to what the B&M employees tell me either. But, I know more about DC electronics than they do so I just nod and smile.

OP, I see you are in Detroit. I'm south of Toledo. I'm willing to meet you part way and help you learn building. I taught applied math to electronics students for 20 years and have an easy way to teach Ohm's Law. I'm a tad backed up at the moment as I'm buying a new drill press, but if you can get a new chip, I'll fix your mod. You're going to need a back up in the meantime anyway. But, when you can get a chip, FDV 510 and c&k switches, and we'll do it right. When its done, it will be better than the authentic :)

How much does building a DNA 40 mod typically cost?

You're in the right place, people are definitely sympathetic to your situation. If it feels like they are being opportunistic it's because the areas you're playing in (and everyone is willing to sell to you) a misstep can lead to bad things, and firing a 0.3 on that mod shouldn't have happened. They kinda want to see that you get your part in it so you're a safer vaper going forward.

That shouldn't be discouraging, you're one of us and they are trying to use it as a teachable moment. And like I said, I'm amazing and I probably wouldn't have broken out my multimeter -- but I wouldn't have fired a 0.3 on that mod because I am scared easily.

Look, I do understand running safe devices, but selling a sub ohm loaded atty without any kind of notice that the build is sub ohm is stupid on its own. I just thought of its put together from the manufacturer, it was okay to use, but I'm incorrect for thinking that apparently.

You're entirely correct -- and this is kinda something that I think we should pay attention to especially as vaping grows and grows. People assume if something is being sold it's OK, and when it isn't, they want someone (the gov) to make it OK. Mods and coils and such are being sold as products when if anything they are a process.

What's the name of the shop, and did they say they built it or it came with it?

In fairness, I'm not convinced you had a 0.3 coil. There's a 0.1 to 0.2 variance in the meter of the mod you have, and you were below the safety threshhold -- I suspect there was a short or something and you got lucky if it kept firing. This could have happened at any point in the transport of the atty, or maybe they slammed in two fasttech coils that were shorted when heated so it was never built right. Even with a hard short silica wouldn't be melting, though maybe the insulator. Maybe it was 0.2-3, and you simply overloaded the wiring for the mod with the amperage. Maybe it stuck and was firing without you realizing.

It definitely is a good reminder that a regulated mod doesn't mean no-risk, so thanks for that. And seriously mate, sorry for your situation -- it really does suck when you have a string like that. Really try to not let it deter you, and in 6 months this'll be an example story you trot out.

I'm new to vaping, and in the past 2 weeks have had awful experiences at my local shop where it was initially purchased. Terrible customer service, no help at all in explaining the equipment to me....initially gave me a 22mg ejuice when I smoke a pack a day, thought I was going to have a heart attack, then wouldn't refund/replace it. When I had problems with my mini pt3 leaking, they said, 'Yeah, that happens'. When I asked them the benefits of single coil vs dual coil, they said 'It's up to you.' When I asked the difference between 1.8ohms and 2.4, they said, 'It's a personal preference.' I now only go there for juice, because it's as cheap as paying shipping, and I can taste it first. I think the more knowledge we can gain to be self-reliant in vaping, the better, and it's absurd to me that these people in these shops are not only terrible at customer service, but don't seem to actually have any vaping knowledge to offer me.

I was under the assumption the Vapor Shark was a protected device which should not fire a faulty atty or one with a coil with too low a resistance? Maybe not...
The vaporshark has the Evolv chip in it, which from what I know is protected? I do know if the coil is built too low, it will flash and not fire (or at least not fully). This all happened with another mod.

Most B&M sales associates know very little about ohms law and vaping safety. Where I live the sales associates are college kids making minimum wage.

Vaping gear and liquid are not regulated by the government. Government regulation is around the corner to 1) raise $$$$$ in the form of taxes 2) to protect the consumer. Number two being a very far second.

I live in WA state and the state government has regulated everything from milk pasturization to firearm registration. Legislation is on the table to tax all vape gear and liquid 95% and no out of state vendor will be able to ship to WA state. There is much more to it but that is the basics.

My point is that live in a nanny state that passes laws to protect me because the government feels I cannot protect myself. Maybe regulating vape gear is a good idea because parts of the vape industry are not regulating themselves properly to protect the consumer.

I am sorry you had to experience this and if I had an extra regulated mod I would send it to you.
