So I am talking to a co-worker about something related to e-cigs and the office "know it all" walks in ( you know the type, they have an opinion about everything because they have done everything ), and my co-worker asked her if she was going to use the e-cigs and "MS. Know it ALL" says that they are way more expensive and she KNOWS they don't work because she has used them before.:?: I replied that there was a good chance that she had tried an inferior product with probably bad juice to boot, and that many people had bad experiences with e-cigs because not all e-cigs are created equal. She then replied that e-cigs and all the other stuff ( patches, gum, lozenges ) were a rip-off and if somebody really wants to quit then they will. "It's just a case of mind over matter." She then stated that she liked to smoke so she was going to keep smoking. ( so there:mad: ) I replied that after a serious bout of cleaning house ( white fixtures in guest bathroom were yellow, yuck ); it really "drove home" just how much crap I was pumping into my lungs and I had to quit! She replied... ( are you sitting down?!).. "My father died from lung cancer, SO? I like to smoke, so I will":blink::blink::blink: ( WTF!! did she just say that? )
At that point I just said "Well that's the most stupid thing I've heard all year" and just walked away.

What do you say to a comment like that? Even when I was a smoker, as a rational adult I knew that it was an addiction and was very bad for my health. Like I said in the title, some people are " Just Plain Crazy".:vapor:

I have someone like that at my work also. It's like they don't want to see the obvious alternative/solution and simply do whatever it takes to rationalize not trying/switching to e-cigs. These people will always live in denial until reality slaps them in the face. And even with a good wack some will always be rebellious till the day they die.

Obvious as the benefits are, it's not for everybody. And if indeed she had been saddled with a lousy product, I can understand the resistance. Call it addiction, call it pleasure (it's both), for many/most/me a crummy e-cig is going to be a poor substitute for smoking.

As time passes and you're sticking with your e-cig, she may be positively influenced by that and give it a second look. Or not.

And... unless you're one of the lucky few who never had to deal with lectures from an annoying anti, I'll bet those lectures don't have much to do with why you're not smoking now. So, I think you'd do well to resist that impulse.

It's sad how many people are so closed to an idea that they'll fight tooth and nail without even hearing what the other person is saying. She can't hear ya man, her ears are clogged with ego.

I liked smoking, I planned to smoke till it killed me. I like vaping, I plan to vape until something else does.

I wasn't even trying to lecture her on smoking; she made a few snarky comments and I replied with what I thought was restraint, but then she made the comment about her father and it just blew me away.

Some people you'll just never be able to convince. It's frustrating as HELL but...it's life. I was in an auto accident in Dec of 1992....(i was 21 yrs old at the time) I spent 2.5 weeks in a coma...almost 2 months in inpatient rehab and 1 year of outpatient rehab. They told me I wouldn't walk out of the hospital....(and the point of that sidebar?) I've had to learn over the last almost 18 years to ignore the naysayers (people who say "you can't" "you won't" or "I don't believe in you") and do my best for myself and quite honestly screw what they say. (if you'll excuse the term LOL) Anyway Just my opinion and we all know what those are like LOL

Yeah - I have to admit the "father thing" is a bit bizarre. I wonder if she was any kind of caregiver to him? Did she watch (first hand) how he obviously suffered before secumming to the disease? I watched my brother in law die of lung cancer this year. It was horrific! It was the slap in the face I needed! (unfortunately)

Have to begrudgingly agree with the poor substitute. I am usually ok unless I'm around smokers. Double whammy, makes me cough from second hand smoke, then makes me want to dip into my tobacco stash. (Stash is a psychological trick from last time I quit for a while. As long as I knew I could smoke, I was able to resist with help of patch/gum now PV) But hey 1 to 2 analogs a day beats 2 pks/day any day of the week.

I've given some goodies to my mom and stepfather and they are kinda trying, but it definitely isnt something you can ram down anybody's throat and get a good result. I have left the carrot in plain sight, they'll have to decide to take it and let it lead them to happy vaping land.

People are people. If they want to be ignorant and petty, guess what you have no obligation to care, much less listen to them. Take care of you and if they are genuinely interested in your success, then take the time to explain what's up.

Even fellow vapers can but heads over this stuff. Think of the response a fresh newb who found ECF after he bought and fell in love with his Blu. He is perfectly happy, yet some would feel obligated to set him straight and might not be too gentle in responses to any problems he might experience chalking them up to serves ya right you got a Blu.

Remember dont sweat the small stuff

AND

It's ALL small stuff

The reason she said that is she doesn't think she can quit so justifies it that way or else she truly isn't ready to try quitting. I have heard all kinds of bizarre stuff from friends as justification to keep smoking and not try vaping. One co worker says, "I am not inhaling food flavorings into my lungs." Ok, but all those other chemicals from cigs is ok? I just smile and walk away.
