cigatron, thanks .. I re-wicked it with more cotton [denser] .. i got it up to 25 w , but i find that a bit too hot for me. 20 w is better for my lungs. I did try 30 w and it seemed dry. A lot of bubbles are rising between draws, which is normal. I think i have it [closer] to right now.

What gauge wire should i get for the future? Mind you, i prefer a cooler vape than you. I have a delrin drip-tip , but i still find 25 to 30 watts too hot for my lips and lungs. I must admit, my Aspire Atlantis is cooler at 20 w with the 0.5 ohm coils.

Hey Joey, great news. Glad it's working better. Like you, I hate a hot vape. Even warm-hot vapes. The 32ga twisted spaced coil I spec'd a few posts ago is a nice cool-warm vape at 22-24w for my 50/50 juice. Keep hunting around with wattage adjustments until you find the greatest vapor density and flavor...that should be the same setting that produces the coolest vape. Heavy dense vapor output helps to keep your coil cool. Too high wattage...the coil begins to run dry...hot vape. Too low...the coil floods with excess juice causing it to boil instead of being converted to vapor....hot vape. As little as 1w can make a notable difference in temp.

Might be the time to mention, optimal wattage will change quickly as the wick breaks in, will stabilize for a long time, then will change slowly as the wick reaches end of life.

Good luck, keep plug'n away and wick it chunky!

So Cal
Well i used the RBA for the first time with the stock coil installed and i wicked it with cotton for the first time. At 16w - 5sec draw it's fine, but at 17w - 5sec draw, it has a bad burnt taste. Is there too much cotton, or is this normal? 70vg/30pg

Hey there Joey:

Looks like we both had fun with coils and the STM rebuild deck last night!

I wanted to try and help you out a bit... but first can you give us all a bit more detail than what we can see?

  1. Did you use an ohm meter on this coil or heat it up prior to wicking?
  2. If you preburned the coils, (pulse the on button and watch it heat), did it heat evenly from middle out?
  3. What is the resistance in ohms?
  4. What wicking material is that?

The coil appears a bit deformed, some winds close at one end, spread out on the other. The likely culprit is using too big a piece of cotton. The cotton should just slide through the coil without deforming or moving the coil once mounted. Cotton is cheap, try another piece and get it right.

Personally, I'm getting great, no make that incredible, results with Japanese (Koh Gen Do) cotton. I cut a strip about double the width of the coil diameter, then I gently peel off the skin on both sides. Roll one end and thread it through, then gently pull back and forth a bit... making sure there is no movement of the coil, no clumping on either end, and no binding. When I do it, I try and be mindful of fluid dynamics. Thinking about how the juice will flow, think garden hose here; you don't want the "hose" kinked or bunched, or knotted. You want the cotton to arc downward and just make contact with the base like a broom. I spend my time with 2 small scissors and try and get it right.

Let us all know those details and try a re-wick with some of my ideas in mind. My first (made last night like yours) so called advanced coil is running at .7 ohms and using 15-20W this thing is a frisking flavor machine! So much so that the idea of a second Submini doesn't seem so far fetched! I'm loving this RBA deck and having fun with building coils.

I don't have a meter, but i pre-burned it and read 0.6 ohm on my mod and it glowed evenly. I used the cotton that came with the Kangertech mini ...
I am vaping at 20w now and it's great !

Well...5 wraps of 26g Kanthal around a 5/64 bit. Came out to, again, .4ohm. I wouldn't want to cram any more coil in there, that's for sure lol

Not the best cotton in that free kit. I'd go get some Koh Gen Do sheets (AKA: Japanese cotton) Here's why I and others, feel it's best:

It is Japanese cotton, mushi iirc.
Kgd is just a brand name and its basically a makeup company, they buy Japanese cotton and put their company name on the packaging which is koh gen do, koh gen do doesn't mean or translate to "Japanese cotton".

Looks good. I vaped my TLP with those slightly shifted coils too. It did pretty well.

Wow, didn't want to go out beyond 30awg or a tot. 3.2mm coil length, concerned for the skewing. I see the wire bend worked well off the end wraps. Good enough that oxidation proceeded. My next jump was straight wire equiv to the 31 build or a straight up 28 but curious to know how you're finding performance. I know the tank can go 45 just doubtful if density can be sustained. This thing really is optimized for <30W performance. Let us know on that will ya cig? You prolly know what I'm looking for, a simple wind for beginners that'll be in the center range, for the Mini. This looks more like a viable long term install for the SubT.

Great job. Thx. Good luck.

:)

Curiosity is getting to me...

RE: jimbobs coils--- If I use the SE calc with the above settings. it says for .4ohms 7 wraps and a whopping 5.8mm width! Is this an anomaly? Is there that much difference between parallel and twisted?

My twisted build fills the top cap chimney opening perfectly (by eye... I need to measure that) and its 4.6mm wide... wouldn't that be a good goal for a build? Match the coil width to the chimney opening diameter? Thinking outloud... or would it be better to match the width to the distance between mounting points so you had straight legs? Or does it matter at all?

I'm mebe thinkin', ya might have got some helpful hands there jimbo. :D You bein' new and all.

If not jeeps, missed your post givin' credit to good ol' cig and didn't even check the numbers, sorry…
but, that's a 6over6-wrap parallel, not 5.

26AWG, 6/6, TLP, 1.984375mm i.d., t.m.c.(?)= 0.4243Ω

Just sayin'. Nice coil there jimbo.

Good luck.

:)

p.s. Welcome jimbo!

OK... I'm gonna try and get away from ECF for a while...

I'm getting info overload today... been reading threads all over the place. many from start to finish.

Time for some scotch and a vape!

This YT video shows what I'm feeling, enjoy my friends, and fellow vape fiends:

LOL :D

Good luck dude…it's an affliction.

Can someone explain exactly what the term "Wicked Chunky" means....Or if possible explain with pics? :)

Extra firm (with extra filling).

Sleep well, and good luck.

:D

p.s. D, I'm using just enough KGD that I have to stretch it a bit to pull it through. Enough that it's rather full on both sides. Tucking it between the posts to clear the housing as it's screwed on as it is that full. Then lightly tuck it down so the ends are just touching the deck directly above the juice holes. I make sure that the ends are fluffy and will so saturate well. The channels aren't blocked. Give the tank a brief puff to force some pressure in and you should see good initial saturation. On my second wick now 2-weeks in and just sensing a slight reduction in flow. I'll replace before flavor starts to mute.
