I kinda feel bad that you've had troubles with the STM....My only trouble was when I rewicked it and cut down on my cotton. I saw online someone say that the wick should have moderate tension as it's pulled through the coil. That was horrible advice for this system. My first wick was Perfect and it was very tight, i only removed it because it was losing flavor. my second, poorly wicked one was with the looser fitting wick and I was indeed getting dry hits. I rewicked yesterday and I used a big chunk of cotton. I had to pull and twist it to get it into the coil. It seemed like to much but it is just right. No dry hits at all @18 watts and I chain vape a bit. Of course all these units are a bit different from one another and some may have QC problems But before I permanently shelved the device I'd try the extremely fat wick approach...Again, sorry you've had such a time of it.- Dave
I am, the insulators are splitting on me when running thicker than 28ga. wire. Can't subohm. The material is more sensitive to heat than the newest clear silicone provided with the PT coils as well. I have to be extra cautious when pulsing the coil to life and when dryburning. Those babies will melt right through and short out. But then again, I have troubles where others don't.... such is my life...lol
I doubt the juice channels are so small that you can't vape at 17w without dryhits. Doesn't explain the intermittency either Joey. As for guys at vape shops being experts? Well, lets not go there....not say'n I am either.
So lets get some specs from ya. Tell us your build and what you're wicked with. What juice ratio. And a pic (top & side views) of those pesky juice channels so we can compare.
In the mean time try wicking it so heavy that you have to roll the cotton down some just to get it through the coil. If problem gets worse you were flooded, if it gets better you were underwicked and dry hitting.
Hope this helps.
I had the installed wire coil that came with the Kanger Mini re-build deck .
The guy at the store did "roll the cotton down some just to get it through the coil" and i believe they use a Japanese cotton.
My juice is 70vg/30pg.
Here is top. one side and other side. Taken this close it looks like it has a good juice channel.

After only two days how does the coil look?
I checked the wick as it is wet and it's not very tight !!
Joey

Been following this thread while waiting on my STmini and Nano, i like to be ready when they arrive. Yesterday i watched a Rip Trippers vid, and he introduced a wicking method that instantly reminded me of the STmini dense wicking style you all have been recommending. The pancake wicking method, he called it, relies on getting the wick dense and tight through the coil, and then cutting the tails to 3mm or 4mm or 5mm from the end turns of the coil depending on your VG/PG ratio (80VG, 70VG, 60VG respectively). He used the Delta 2 RBA in his vid, but said this could be used with any tank. I thought this might help a few peeps around here suffering from dry hits and small juice channels with high VG juices. It's only an 8 minutes vid so please watch it as i can't explain everything he did here.
Joey it looks much better wicked this time! How's she working?
Although I wouldn't rely on the guy at the store to wick it. Did you buy some of that cotton? The Japanese cotton comes in a flat sheet and all the strands of cotton run in the same direction, get a small package and it'll last a few months for newbs like us. I'm 2/3rd of the way through my 6 week old bag of it. It really is easy to wick these coils. And the cotton isn't expansive if you foul one up. Since you're using the stock Kanger coil, we can give you any kudos there. Get some wick and wire and spend some time playing around with wrapping some coils. It's fun and challenging!
I'm not sure how this works? It's not on the deck? Go to 5:19 of video to see his pancake wick....For any of you peeps watching Rips video, take notice of the size of the Delta 2 air channels. They are at least twice as big as the ST mini rba.

that why i have 2 stmini's, but lol theyre now both in rba mode, a 1.3 &0.5ohm, imo theyre better than the occ coilsIt isn't working Darryl ! It worked in the store, but I kept getting dry hits when i got home. I need to start again. I just gave up for the night and put in the stock 1.2 ohm coil. Vaped on that all night. I sure am not buying cotton at this point. I picked up a 5 pack of 1.2 ohm OCC coils and some juice yesterday.
To tell the truth, i feel like just packing the rebuild deck away and just use the OCC coils. I just want to vape and not get dry hits and frustration. The point of this is to keep off cigarettes and be satisfied.

FYI - I inquired to KangerTech to see if they have spare build decks for sale for the STMini. I see the need to have a few spares ready to switch out easily, and for tinkering with new builds. They will have them available for sale in 2-3 weeks.
