Kayfun 3.1 clone on eVic, atty short with 28g kenthal?

Hi guys need some advice please

I’m using a kayfun 3.1 clone on my eVic atty, using different ranges of kenthal A1 wire, 32g, 30g, 28g and also 28g flat.

I found before that when wrapping the 28g flat the eVic atty would report a ‘atomiser short’ error, this happened let’s say for argument sake roughly every 3rd time. Since switched to using the 32g regular instead without problems, but recently this seemed to escalate to the extent that I am unable to build a working setup with any of my 28g kenthal wire (flat or standard) with my standard 5 to 7 wraps around the ekowool wick. Anything more than 8 wraps especially on the flat wire is too big to ‘fit’, so to speak.

Important to note that the 32g wire works every time without errors, using the exact same method and I always triple check that there is no protruding or 'touching' ends which typically should cause a ‘atomiser short’.

Has anyone else come across a similar scenario and probably more important any idea of how to fix this?
I do really prefer vaping the 28g wires, gives me a far superior taste on my juice than the 32g.

Huh. I have never used flat kanthal wire. I can say that the Kayfun works very well with just about any coil you put into it. I have tried some pretty exotic builds, but I am running a straight up micro coil built with 30ga at 1.8 ohm wicked with cotton. It is giving very solid performance with a minimum of fuss.

Hopefully someone will have some better info for you. Good luck, and welcome!

Depending on the size of the coils, your resistance is probably too low for the Evic to fire.

With 28 gauge wire, you're going to need to do a 7-wrap coil at 2mm diameter to just barely get to the minimum resistance (1.2 ohms). Less wraps or smaller coils, it's not going to fire at all.

AHA - I was leaning towards the possibility of ohms too low, your answers settles it.

was looking for minimum ohms supported in the user manual, was in a hurry so only got the german version for the eVic, noticed too that there is a newer 'eVic Supreme' out which specifies it can go as low as 0.5 ohms coils since I am using the older model it is logical that it would be a higher number of minimum ohms supported like K-Tec said.

if I remember correctly before it really started to give me a headache the atomizer read 1.1 on the one new coil before jumping to the 'atomizer short' message.

will experiment a bit more with the above in mind and report back the findings.

thanks guys!

Yup exactly as K_Tech recommended, ‘forced’ in 8 wraps of the 28g flat, picked up perfect ohm reading of 1.4, which is low enough for my taste and high enough for the atomiser not to fail with errors.

Just another interesting observation. While experimenting I remembered that I used to ‘double over’ the ekowool wick before wrapping the coil, now I have no idea if this truthfully factored into the higher ohm reading too, but given that the coil ‘wire’ use is then a couple of millimetres longer, I suppose it would?

Before when reporting this experienced problem I forgot about the doubling over of the wick, which due to the difficulty in bunching up the ends into the chamber I opted to go the single tread instead for some time, which I believe would explain why the same method used in both instances - even amount of coil wraps – gave different outcomes. The differentiating factor then being the single vs doubled over wick.
