Kent, just saw your post. I watched a RipTripper youtube vid where he built a chimney coil for the KFL, looked pretty cool. May have to try it on my next build.

I converted all my Kayfuns to this. It takes more cotton, but it really kicks up the flavor another notch. BAM! I differ from RiP Trippers' method just a little. I use a 1.6mm inner diameter for the micro coil, and I do NOT lift the coil to create a gap above the air hole. I press it down against the air hole. I do use the wicking method he demonstrates.

In this video, he creates two coils. The first is a horizontal with cotton through the coil and the second is the chimney coil. He starts with the chimney about 14:52, so let's see if I can link it that way...

That's the build I was talking about, looks good. Glad to hear you don't lift the coil, that looks tricky. I'm going to try the wick Nailz showed and see if that works to get more flavor on my current 1.1 ohm coil (hate to rebuild it as it's firing like a champ). If that doesn't work I'll go for a higher ohm and maybe try the chimney method.

I'm using standard microcoil. I saw rips video, but have had issues with the chimney/vertical coil on other units, so I haven't tried it on my kfl+ clone. I followed Pbusardos method. No leaking, works great! I've got the air hole almost wide open. I tighten it down just a little bit to avoid the whistling. I'm using cotton balls (boiled) at 1.6 ohms @ 8w with 32mm (28ga) kanthal 5/16 drill bit. I've had this build for 3 days with no issues when I follow the fill method below...
For filling, take the top cuff of the mouth piece off, plug the air hole in the bottom, juice it up. Keep the air hole covered. Put the cuff back on. Keep the air hole covered. Turn it up side down. Give it a few seconds for the air bubble to rise, keeping the air hole covered... Then release the air hole.. This will allow the pressure created from tight in the top cap to vent air instead of liquid into the build chamber and out the air hole.

Nailz, just eptied my tank and rewicked using your methed and working well. Thank you for the step by step pics! Still not getting great flavor, must be the coil being too low and I'm gonna have to rewrap at 1.5-1.7. I think this 1.1 just cooks flavor off maybe.

Wow, forgot to mention I have a kick in my mod for this as well. Usually vape at around 8.5-9.0 with the kick. Turned it up, no change in flavor. Turned it down, no change. Removed it and POW! There it is...nice.

Guess I'll give these new eFest 35a 2500mah batteries a real run now and see how it all performs.

My recommendations is this: Build with a standard micro coil and cotton wick. Plain jane "boring" build but it gives the best all around vape. No need to do all those fancy named builds, they are not as good as a standard build. Sure you may get more vapor but you lose flavor, you may get more flavor but then it leaks, the best balance is boring. Be boring and enjoy a hassle free vape.

I thought as much. We're not fishing this time of year, either. We generally start in Spring with Cobia followed by Dolphin/Wahoo/Tuna/Marlin/Sailfish/Swordfish through the fall. When it first starts getting cold, Flounder. Oh, and my GF likes bottom fishing for Trigger fish, grouper, Mingo, Snapper, etc...

I agree that the plain Jane micro coil & cotton is certainly a good setup in this great atomizer. And there is no need to do other builds. But I simply have to disagree with the rest of your post. I haven't experienced either of those problems with the KFL, though I've only done two types of coil/wick combos. Best is subjective and boring is so . . . boring.

ETA: Oh, I just noticed I was replying to the Alaska fisherman with a lot going on!

Hey Gotalot...are you on a crab boat out of Dutch? I caught a glimse of someone using a PV on an episode of Bering Sea Gold, cool to know some of the fishermen are using them too. Stay safe!

Tried another wisk set up, can't tell if it helped or now so going to move my ohms back up on the next build Figure it can't hurt taste wise and the KFL with this 1.1 micro is devouring juice so it will help that as well.

Let me know if anyone finds the silver bullet with tank, just ordered the Youde AGI to try that one too. On sale at 101vape for $10.99 so figured what the heck, why not (Genny style atti and a dripper all in one).

I was on a Longliner out of Dutch. We fished for cod. Retired from that at this moment. Prices are way down and the money just isn't there anymore. I seen where Zen is making a waterproof PV for one of the guys on the Northwestern. If I wind up going back up there, I will have to look at getting one, otherwise my Reo Grand would be making the trip with me.

I've gotta agree with Gota here, plain jane micro coil and cotton (nothing fancy, weird wraps or anything) and the flavor and vapor are simply stellar. First coil I built was a tad on the "high side" as far as ohms go (2.3 IIRC) but it gave TONS of flavor. Currently using a 1.5ohm microcoil and cotton, but I think the other had better flavor, so once I finish off this tank, I'll probably head back to the 2.0+ ohm range.

In my REO, I LOVE the micro coils at low ohms, but the Kayfun, I think the sweet spot (at least for CLS) was about 2.2 ohms.

I have found that a higher ohm coil works best in the kayfun. I have 1.8ohm micro in mine right now and the flavor is outstanding. Vapor is outstanding as well although I have never been one to try and fog up a room.

It's similar to the chimney, save for there is more cotton around the outside (like a carto). I will snap a photo for you when I refill...

I need to work out a video about making my custom mesh+cotton build. I've explained it in the Kayfun Lite thread a few times but I don't think anyone has actually gone the distance to try to build it as it is a bit complex.

Basically I run a 28awg 10 wrap micro coil over a 5/64" drill bit that comes out at about 1.5ohms. Then I roll a solid stick of mesh wick and adjust it until it can thread through the resulting micro coil by twisting it through. I attach the coil diagonally on the deck with the stick sitting straight on top of the deck from one corner of the deck to the other. Then I trim the mesh wick just a hair shorter than the inner diameter of the chamber section so that you can put the chamber on without the mesh touching the edges of the chamber. I then take off the chamber and start pulse oxidizing the wick until the coil is glowing evenly from the center outwards. After its properly oxidized and glowing evenly with every fire I prepare two small lengths of cotton and I wrap each one on the ends of the mesh wick and lay down the cotton legs on the floor of the chamber over the juice channels making sure to cover the entire floor of the chamber with a bit of cotton. The cotton basically acts as a transport for the juice to come up from the channels and onto the mesh wick. When I put the chamber on and wet the cotton and mesh wick I make sure I push the cotton bits off to the sides and away from the coil.

This has been producing the best and cleanest flavor out of any build I've ever tried on my Kayfuns for the past 8 months, vapor production is awesome. I run them on Neme Clones with Evolv Kick 2's set at 13watts and they fire nice and warm instantly without any pre-heating necessary before the inhale. They handle 15 watts just fine as well and I'm sure they could handle even more power without wicking issues.

Maintenance is a sinch as well. Just pull off the cotton leads and dry burn the hell out of the coil blowing off any excess residue from the coil while dry burning. I drip the hot coil in a bit of water and continue dry burning until it's bone dry and clean. Re-do the cotton tails down onto the channels, soak the wicks, re-fill and go. Using my CLS+GCD blend I can go about 3 tank fulls without the flavor fading away or tasting burny but after the 3 tanks there is some definite gunk on the coil but the flavor is still pretty much 90% pure.
