The other nice thing is when they do an update it used to be since you get a fresh copy of Kodi everytime you do and update with their updater you used to have to go in and authorize Real Debrid and Trakt again. They wrote the code into it now that you have the choice of keeping your customizations and permissions so you get a fresh copy of Kodi and it saves your stuff. The addons like Gary said update themselves. Thats why when you start Kodi you wait about 5 min before you go to an addon. If any of the addons have updates they usually will do it about 3 min in. Also very important to shut Kodi down properly and give it a chance to do it's backups and what ever else it does behind the scenes. Thing can get ugly if you just go to Home or shut your box down with out allowing that everytime.
once a week, when I start my KODI, I go into the addons of the one I want to use to watch my next show - click on information, then update. It pdates right away, and I can watch that while the other ones update.

Kodi is a free program you can install on your computer or you can buy a kodi box for your tv.
not buy a KODI box... you buy an Android box with KODI pre-loaded. Or you buy an Android box and load KODI yourself. :)

I wonder if some of the services you download on kodi can be also downloaded on roku.
not really the same... they have some aps that are available on both, but they work slightly differently. KODI is a streaming program, while ROKU is a subscription service box.

. KODI is a streaming program, while ROKU is a subscription service box.
So we are both clear. There is no subscription fee for the roku. You buy the box. It's streams programs from the services one subscribes to such a s netflix or amazon prime or hulu and of course they charge monthly fees.

Is that what you meant?

Well lets go this way some of the services on Roku can be downloaded on a Kodi box but not the other way. You need an android based box or a computer for Kodi. There are some instructions for putting Kodi on a Roku but good luck making it work.

Some I'm not sure all Kodi boxes come with the Google Play Store app already loaded and a browser. And I'm sure there is a way to add it if it doesn't come with it. From there you can put Netflix and Amazon on but you still have to have a subscription. Most Kodi boxes I believe will only show Netflix and Amazon in SD a Roku depending on the one like mine will show them in 1080 HD. And like I said Kiba is right I remember seeing a video on adding Kodi to a Roku but it's not really designed for it I don't know if the addons will work, it didn't sound good to me. I still have 2 Rokus and a Kodi box plus my TV has Chromecast. I really don't use much of anything but the Kodi, some days I will use it for 12-14 hrs. some maybe 6 but I have Dish for locals and we watch the local news and national news in the morning and afternoons too sometimes. But Kodi boxes also have the capability of watching the subscription addons that have network feeds like Sling and USTVnow. But also like Gary said all of the stuff that is on Netflix and Amazon is available on Kodi for free along with the stuff on HBO and the other pay channels but not necessarily in HD especially series like Bill Maher for example but with that it's not important the movies from those do come in HD.

These boxes tend to not work very good if they are a long ways from the modem the best is ethernet. You could run into problems trying to WiFi from the bedroom.

I've had no issue with my wi-fi router which is at least 35' and four walls away from my furthest device. No need for ethernet cable for moi...

Hey do you guys have special streams you choose over others?

Pat, to answer your question, I let my Exodus, SALTS, Zen, et al, via setting configs, to determine da best (aka highest def) and auto-launch! I have no 'hands on' as to which 'scrubber'/source' is used due to my 'settings' fer each capable add-on once properly configured. I've posted earlier how to accomplish such.

Look below and see my first 10 possible sources (in Zen, an older add-on) within 10 seconds. Again due to my 'add-on settings', I'm not concerned 'bout ANY source/def. I get the best within 10 seconds (not counting upload time) and it will launch in the highest def! If required, I'll post a link later on (post supper)...

I have Sports Devil and it has an update available but haven't bothered to update. It has been set to not update automatically by SS but the update is there if I want it.

Ya mean your SS $ubscription doesn't auto update?

Real Debrid costs $3 a month if you take a 6 month subscription...

Fer what purpo$e?

The addons, like Gary said, can auto- update themselves.

Yepper, configured within your add-ons!

Also the 4k channels they have are flaky too and don't work very well. I've tried them but don't use them.

Got a 4K TV and/or 4K add-on?

It was a live stream on Sports Devil and worked good and I haven't even updated. I'm watching a Pink Floyd concert called Delicate sound of thunder. Looks old and in 3D my tv is not 3D so I'm getting double pictures but thats how 3d comes through if you don't have 3d . It's taken off of YouTube.

Just don't select 4K/3D options if ya don't have a compatible TV.

I was amazed going to All in the Family and finding every season plus Leave it to Beaver. Kodi is really amazing. Next Elvis movie on deck is Kissin Cousins. Ginny said it's one of her favorites.
* See below

How to record from the TV.
* No need to...

It's streams programs from the services one subscribes to such a s netflix or amazon prime or hulu and of course they charge monthly fees.
* Why subscribe?

* Seriously my fellow interested porchers, especially Gary & a few others have busted their butts to bust your reservations/$ub$cription$ bubble ya may view within!

Ferget da concept of kneeling before da altar of movie studio$/cable network$. Thus far, what a 'few' of us are doing is legal as long as it's fer personal use (remember VHS/Beta tapes?)

I personally can not determine what your technical/legal/disposable income comfort level may be. BUT, those dat care and are truly tryin' to $ave ya $um $$$ are here!

Must say that one comment re a subscription service did not update add-ons, I found VERY disturbing!

Oh BTW, my first venture into a PC Kodi 17 was not satisfactory! Will try a few mo' times when I have da time...

Parting fond kudos to our KISS Gary!

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.....I'm so confused:facepalm:.........I am going back and reading from the beginning. If I cut the cable...I still have to pay $60 a month for internet...yes high speed but it's only $50 more for 2 dvr's and everything except hbo, showtime and the sorts.

I have a xbox one on one tv and a Rouku on the other. I belong to Netflix and that's it. Any recommendations? I am just starting to figure this out and I am leaning towards the (SS).
O, what does that stand for again? Thanks!

I'm from N. Mi. too...some family members live in Onaway and their internet speed is kinda slow. I'd suggest to just keep reading all the great info and input in this thread and take your time assessing what would work best for you.

My problem is out here there is no Internet available. We have an unlimited phone plan on our phones and we tether our computers for Internet access. We had DSL years ago but canceled when we got the phones. Now AT&T says it's no longer available. So no wired Internet access available here. Don't want to loose the use of a phone to watch TV.

I also see on the Kodi download page you need Windows 10 to load it on a PC. Nope, all windows 7 here. We have Dish for TV and an antenna for local channels.

yes - that is what I meant... mind you there are subscriptions you can use on the KODI app as well.

Jup. Keyword being "CAN". Not required for anything. Supposedly some will give you faster downloads and higher definition. Not that you can't get that without them. Long story I guess. :)
