I spoke to a guy last night on messenger and he was having troubles with his new SS1 watching Big Bang Theory. His speed was showing 120Mbps he was using WiFi and any RD 1080 stream would kick him right out. So I offered to try mine with my measely 37Mbps ethernet went to the exact Season and Episode and RD stream 1st one on the list and came right up in 1080 Dolby 5.1 so I think my dedicated DSL internet is a pretty good connection which is why my box is working so well. One of the reasons anyway, He was also using about 2 other things on Wifi also. I think Ethernet is a lot better since it offers that device the priority. I am running 2 phones and a computer on mine on WiFi but they never interfere with the ethernet.

Makes perfect sense, Pat. I have no problem with wifi 25 feet away. However, I don't use wifi for anything unless someone comes over with a laptop. My machines are hard wired with cat7. Faster, cleaner than wifi. Always. So if you CAN run wire to the box... do it. Wifi for anything should really only be used as a last resort IMHO.

Some things I have learned after many hours of reviews is when buying a box you will get better performance with 2GB 16MB of memory and the S905x processor. Have also heard that android 5.1 is the most stable and the minimum required for Kodi 17. Other then that there are 100s to choose from. Other then that I think that most any box with those specs can be made to operate just as well although I have heard some run very hot. Don't know about that. I do know that Gary is right, don't use builds install addons separately and if you have a good enough understanding they will work great.

Not exactly, Pat. My boxes have an SD slot where you can add up to 64Mb of memory. But I really don't know why anyone would need that much. Unless maybe if you're going to download things. But again... I don't see any reason for that anymore either.
As far as builds, I'm not saying they aren't a "good" thing. Just that I've never come across one that I actually like. I'm kind of a plain Jane kinda guy. Don't need or even like bells n' whistles.

Yeah from what I've seen they add a lot of unneeded stuff. If you have the right repositories it's pretty much all available. Also I see Kodi 17 is Google Friendly and very easy to add Store and apps from there. I have a memory slot which I don't need but you can add all your photos using it and not plugging up your box or use Google Photos and it's all on a cloud which is also very easy.

It's actually fun learning all this stuff with a box that if I screw it up they can go in and straighten it out or just reset it and rerun SS updater fresh install and your back to original set up. I really wouldn't have a fear of buying a box now that only has Kodi on it. I see Minix is supposed to come out with the most advanced box yet called the U9 but it's like waiting for a new SXmini supposed to come out in Nov then Jan then Mar. I would be curious to see what's under the hood in that one.

This seems to be turning into the Kodi thread but here's a couple items of interest for over-the-air TV:

The over-the-air DVR. Some external tuners, maybe even some TVs for all I know, can record digital broadcasts. I have the Mediasonic HW180 and there's also the Ematic that can be had for about $30, plus a USB stick memory is needed. My box has some flaws, as you might expect at that cheapness: biggest thing is the pausable TV isn't really usable, you have to do a full record, and the volume is reduced in playback. Its program guide is flawed but far better than my TV's basically nothing. The tuner section is solid and it outputs HD.

I also have the cheap 150 mile rooftop antenna. Of course 150 miles is unlikely, but I'm getting over 50 with good signal quality. In fact, by picking up another city I get options not on cable at my location. These also can be had for as low as $30 and can be identified by "X" shaped support pieces (plastic) holding "U" shaped front elements, the price and features. It has a rotor that allows adjustment without additional wires, but there is no visual feedback and it often moves in random directions, I can usually make small adjustments by signal strength but occasionally get it turned all around which takes walking outside and looking at it and retrying about 10 times. Also it's so boosted it might not be good near strong signals.

My problem is out here there is no Internet available. We have an unlimited phone plan on our phones and we tether our computers for Internet access. We had DSL years ago but canceled when we got the phones. Now AT&T says it's no longer available. So no wired Internet access available here. Don't want to loose the use of a phone to watch TV.

I also see on the Kodi download page you need Windows 10 to load it on a PC. Nope, all windows 7 here. We have Dish for TV and an antenna for local channels.

I wanted to ask if anyone had tried fully cutting the cable, once you drop the TV-internet bundle the internet itself is a less good deal. Comcast says I'd save $4 to keep the same internet level w/o TV, and $50 a month just for economy is also fairly ridiculous. I see cell based internet for cheap, e.g. freedompop or part of a cell phone service, the data or the quality is limited but how much? Looks like HD video is out, constant data usage concerns on cheaper options, metroPCS has free data for internet radio but only with their preferred providers (not mine).

Did you perhaps try an 'attic' antenna before going to the 'roof' kind?

@clnire I was curious you said you have dish for tv don't you automatically get locals. I thought all dish packages include locals.

Um... NO! That's why I had cable and satellite. Cable for local (kind of). This iz canada. No such thing as local. And no such thing as affiliate stations either. Local to here, according to the tv is a 2 hour drive. So kinda useless. .... eye digress.

But satellite tv considers east coast michigan. sigh. That's why the HD antenna werks for me. Buffalo is practically across da street. And I think Ken said there were a lot of duplicates with my 23 channels. Um... noap. Nun. Actually amazing how many channels are out there that aren't picked up by cable or satellite.
Now, havin sed dat... this is HD antenna. So often some will fade in and out. So prolly a half dozen or so that are rock solid. But enuff to enable me to cut the cable entirely.

Oh ok here that's the package I got which is only available to old timers with dish. But I don't get all the locals that are available with OTA but basically thats all I get except for religious and shopping channels.

No, my house has cable wiring that goes outside so attic wouldn't have really been easier (though more protected). I did try rabbit ears including ones on a mast extension outside. Proper rabbit ears, not the kind with a UHF loop, spread wide, can be very effective for digital if positioned perfectly but are a "bad" design in how tweaky they are. Especially with a booster. So that might be a good way to try antenna if you have some (and a balun to connect them if needed). I found inside antennas, at least, sensitive to position as well as angle, sometimes moving just a foot can make a big difference (and there's one spot in the @#$% middle of the house that's just great). Note my outside mast is actually just 2 1" plastic conduit tubes lashed to the old DirecTV dish on the roof turned sideways over the edge, which can be turned from the ground although difficult to use effectively (note if you have any such old rooftop equipment like that dish, make sure the cable guy didn't disconnect their grounds, bad idea!).

As I still have a cheap SD cable bundle I'm mainly using antenna for HD and cable for guide, HBO and on demand. Using HD more as I now have the TVs. With previous antennas it was also needed for backup as reception was poor about 1/3 the time. I'm considering a change at the end of the winter.

Yes, we get Orlando local channels on dish. News with all the shock and awe and not as accurate weather. With the antenna we get Gainesville news and weather, not quite as dramatic and more accurate weather.
