What are you using it with, some kind of modem? The routers I have work fine but I have to use the fios modem/router bc it's the only thing that can send/recieve to the ONT. I was having some issues until I completely disabled all router & wifi functions, now it functions only as a modem and all is well.

I bought a new Motorola SB6183 Surfboard modem to replace the older Arris modem the cable company gave me when I signed up.

Yeah that's the kind I used to have, when I had cable... They tried hard to sell me whatever thing they had though.

The router, I have 2 pretty new ones, Asus a 3 100 which is being used for vpn stuff and netgear nighthawk for regular internet, but never that, did you ever just go through and check all of the settings in the UI to make sure there's just not some setting somewhere tripping it. I have had something sort of like that before with my Asus one, where mine was set to refresh it's IP once every night, but there's a specific way you have to restore connection and the modem assigns the IP when it restarts. So anyway I found that setting deep in the bowels of the UI and turned it off.

It looks fine, but I haven't done an exhaustive comparison to commonly used settings. There should be a way to set lease time to infinity for the system administrator (me, in my house!).

When that happens it's unresponsive to the admin login address 192.168.0.1, but my laptop shows connected, no internet, so wireless must be up for the LT to log in.

This is very common in a Google search with many different brands and types of routers.

It's been 3 days since I connected the Archer C7 to a 24hr timer. No problems so far. It shuts down the router for 30 minutes at 3:30am and starts it back up at 4am. I just bought one of those timers with 48 push down/pull up switch actuators. The smallest increment is 30 minutes.

Prior to that I was having to go upstairs every other day and manually cycle power to the router to get a wireless connection back.

Yeah, maybe a few are using the same type of hardware or firmware or something. The Asus and netgear seem to be alright though, if anyone thinking about trying a new one.

I thought about returning it, but the 6 month warranty was expired. The Archer forum and many other router forums suggested a timer to reset it once a day to fix the problem. Max lease time is 120 hours or about 5 days, so that's not it. The timer works fine to solve the issue.

I wish I could give you guys the secrets behind SS and why it works. Just had another new update and added some interesting addons that I haven't tried but I'm sure they will work. Working fine on EX, Elys, Gen reb, Specto, 1 channel, Wolf Pack will check the new ones also added more repos.

I know enough about routers and modems to purchase my own stuff and configure/hook it all up.

But the newest little "thing" that cable companies are doing, if you don't buy the modem from THEM (for $20-30 more than I could get at Best Buy) if you have a connection problem, they won't guarantee the equipment or anything else.

What ends up happening is, that instead of blaming their network, somehow it will come down to "your equipment" (because Tier 1 help desk people in call center are going to default to their "scripts" to solve your problem, which are like kindergarten solutions).

And if you are using your own equipment, even if the problem ISN'T in your equipment, they will say it is, and if they have to send someone out for a truck roll, you are going to get charged a lot of $$.

All this is in the "fine print". :)

So upfront, it is safer, but more expensive, to have the tech bring THEIR modem for the new install, and buy it that way. Because otherwise, the $$ and headaches down the line, should anything happen, won't be worth the pain and suffering.

It may depend on your carrier or your area, Racehorse.
I always purchase my modem separately. I give them my mac address, and they plug that into the database as an allowed device.
It helps if the device you get matches their list of known working devices. They cannot troubleshoot the 1000s of different routers on the market, and have tested a limited number.
If you go to their page, they will give you a list of "allowable" (read: they can troubleshoot) devices.

Best vpn provider?

Depends on how big your tinfoil hat is.

I like PIA (Private Internet Access), but they are based in the US which is part of the 5 eyes. (Means they share intelligence)

If you are concerned with the 5 eyes (might now be known as 7 eyes) then you need to look for a VPN that is NOT based in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom or the United States.

IMHO, I am not doing anything that would warrant high level government attraction, I am mainly trying to protect my privacy with my ISP so PIA is good enough. They are a good value and have worked for me.

You dont have to do anything that warrents high level security. Big companys are watching us. The other day I receaved an email from my cable tv provider telling me that i was streming illegal pirited movies....Not exactly like that but they told me to stop or they will discontinue my service. I had just installed a new version of popcorn time....
Since then i unistalled it and put the old app back. The thing is that I have 2 andriod boxes running kodi and one is running the lates version. I havent installed the movie addons on the new one untill i feel safe without my cable company threatening me.
