For anyone looking to add Kodi to your Amazon Fire Stick, here is the perfect instructional video.

Thanks for that shortcut Mike... no time right now, but will definitely be following that vid sometime this weekend!

You do need some type of keyboard especially with a cheaper box.

I paired a bluetooth mouse to my Fire TV stick, more as a proof-of-concept than anything - it works. Haven't tried a BT keyboard yet, but I'd bet that would work too.

If I was going to buy one I think, except for the fact that Amazon makes it so if they want to ban Kodi you can't stop it

From what I understand, they can't force OS updates if'n ya 'hack', or 'jailbreak', it. After that, you can also install an alternate OS if you wish. Or you can just install Kodi without jailbreaking it, but then you're at the mercy of any future Amazon updates which may disable Kodi.

Hope it didn't seem too OT that I was posting about my internet connection/wireless set-up but my win7 pc is older and I'm only running 12Mbps interwebbies.

I just wanted to give or get ideas on how to run everything efficiently. Just being able to have my pc run well helps me with Kodi. I got my pc to idle now @ 0-2% with nothing running, which helps mucho.

Kodi is now very responsive to input and I don't get buffering.

    Pat,

I started an Exodus 1080 movie, then paused it. Kodi eventually went back to the selection menu. No 'resume' option upon re-selection! Interesting...

Not OT at all! Any inputs improving streaming, regardless of platform, is definitely welcomed.

ETA: Hope to test drive Kodi 17 (Krypton) later on.

Well I see SS has a new update out today so will have to see what it is all about. Seems like they do it once a month and tweak it and get rid of dead addons and replace them with others. Really works great now that they have the updater fixed so you can save your settings and don't have to go in and reauthorize Real Debrid and Trakt which I use all the time. I know they are not ready to update to 17 yet but it always seems to work better after the update. I think they have had 3 since I got it. A whole bunch of my addons updated yesterday including an new repo for Specto. Maybe I'll run the update as soon as we finish watching The Green Mile again.

Kay I wanted to show you this cause I wanted to make sure you have a good experience with it. If you get it from elitemodsfl.com thhis is the kind of help you can expect. I told them a little about you and that you may need some help. Heres one of the responses.
Ron Wagner My Mother is nearly 70. She and her boyfriend have 2 SSs in their house. They are highly proficient with their boxes. My mother is pretty good on the computer before this but her boyfriend isn't and he won't even send a text on his flip phone. My mother started off with calling tech support right away. One of the guys there gave her his personal cell and said she could just text him questions. That happened once or twice and now she's off her training wheels and cruising.

What I'm saying is, I know these guys bend over backwards to make sure you get past the learning curve.

It's the same box with the same stuff they sort of work together but there is a different number for tech support. Elite mods programs the box and does all the updates. SS also sells the same box but I've heard that their tech support is a little better at Elite Mods they are exactly the same box and the 2 companies are just a couple of miles apart in Orlando and I;m not really sure of their relationship, I know it's close. I bought mine from SS that was before I even knew Elite Mods existed. You'll get good support at either but I've just heard Elite was a little faster and that's where the techs work.

Well they told me SS makes the boxes but EliteMods writes and does all the programming. It is better to buy from Elitemodsfl.com. I see they are both out of the airmouse but Elite will ship the box and the airmouse when they arrive SS won't ship till 2/22. People say support the developer get it from elitemodsfl.com

I have to say, this is a great thread. IF you are tech savvy. What some of us (ME) need is a "kick the cable to the curb for DUMMIES" thread. Here's what I want to do.
    1. Get rid of cable
    2. Be able to watch at least ONE local station.
    3. Watch my beloved Steelers
    4. Get main stations, such as CBS, NBC, ABC, AMC, TNT, etc.
    5. I am NOT a gamer, so nothing needed there

    What I DO have
    1. Smart tv
    2. Netflix
    3. Amazon Fire stick

I want to be able to watch all this stuff on my 55inch HD tv.

Any takers on this dummie????? Thanks, y'all!!!

Agreed the antenna if you are in a good reception area is the way to go, If not for some $$$ you can get all the networks on USTVnow or SlingTV or DirectTVgo. You can get live TV on a Kodi box on some addons but from what I've seen it is more irritating then easy to watch. None of these will be local channels and USTVnow offers 9 channels free in HD for 45 days then I believe at the present it is still free in SD but not really sure on that, have not give it a test run. Sling is also available on Roku and they give you a week for free and I have used that for a game on ESPN and worked fine, There is also Fox Sports Go which works good for sporting events on Fox, the other networks offer streaming but require you to have it on your cable or dish package so don't know what the big deal is about that. If you already have it why stream it.

Kay when you get yours I'll give you my phone# and I can kinda walk you through the initial setup. Only thing I'll have to investigate how the standard remote works, I've never even taken mine out of the package so not sure about it but will ask some questions I don't know how the logitech keyboard works either for the same reason. What I did with mine cause I wasn't sure about the airmouse was plug the USB dongle from my wireless keyboard and mouse I use on my computer and used that. Like I said you can get the same airmouse on Amazon but it is not programmed so the on off will work and there is not a user change to make it work but I know you can get by with the standard remote but like I say I'll have to look into it. If you have a keyboard and mouse that hooks with a dongle that will work, there are 2 USB ports on the box it also has BT. What is your internet speed, and are you close enough to your modem to run an ethernet. The box comes with an ethernet cable and and HDMI cable. You do have an open HDMI plug in on your TV right?

I would also recommend Real Debrid which costs 16 Euros for 6 months. If you want to watch HD it is really nice. It is not required but I like the fact that when I get to the streams the RD 1080 ones come up first then HD then further down SD. With Exodus, Specto, 1 channel, and 2 or 3 others it works and I can usually go to the 1st stream and it works. I also recommend Trakt.tv which is free and makes it so easy to go through their website and find movies you would like to see and put them to a personal list and once it's authorized on the addons it works on you can just go to the list you've made up and pick what you want. I must have 60+ on my Movie List and probably 30-40 on my TV list. That way it keeps track of what you have watched and puts a check by it and with the TV when there are new episodes you can just go to that category and it shows you when they are available usually the next day from air time. Plus you can put something in the search like for me Stephen King and Quentin Tarantino and it will show all the movies that they either played in or made or you can go to other peoples lists who have made their lists public and just use theirs. There are just so many choices. My Stephen King list that someone else made up must have at least 20-25 or more movies on it. We've watched most but like to go back and watch again.

I get nearly nothing with an antennae, even on the roof. I guess that's just for live tv tho. Everything will be available on Kodi the next day?? That's about when I get around to watching things anyways. I can wait a day for free.

I do like to watch football or some bb games the same evening tho.
