Trial and error is really the best way to get a sense of what you need. Wicking is as much an art as a science.

I've switched to rayon so I don't use cotton anymore, put from what I remember it might be a 7 - 10 mm strip for a 3 mm ID coil (note that that's after the outside layers have been removed, and you should cut with the grain of the fibres, not across them). You can always add a bit more if it's not enough or pull some fibres off if it's too much.
