I don't have personal experience to offer... we got away from the E9 pretty quickly. But I did do some research before moving on...
According to this the D-2 is also marketed under the following names:
* V9
* Greensmoke
* Red Dragon
* KR808D-2
* LoongTotem
* Smoke51
* Vapure
* ePuffer EAZE Magnum original

LeCig is the only retailer I can personally vouch for, although we have not tried their D-2 batts. But their D-1 batts are good quality, shipping is fast and free.
HTH!

Thanks bluedove3!

That is very helpful.

Just curious...

I assume 'we' is you and your spouse or significant other, and that
you did initially have an e9.

My PV is the Smoke51 brand purchased just a few weeks ago.

Before finding ECF I tracked down some information indicating that it
is an e9. Assuming ONE manufacturer... I ordered an e9 from China.

They claimed to be the original manufacturer and that their product
is compatible with all the 'knock offs'. Perhaps it is true that they
make the e9, but I still don't know which was the knock off.

(My guess is Kranger made it first as the KR808-D2 or similar distinction.)

When the e9 arrived it had a slightly different threaded joint from the
Smoke 51 battery... and the unit was defective. :~(

After joining ECF I learned that it is also called a KR808-D2.

Not sure which manufacturer or exact model number the Smoke 51
uses to build their kits.

There is a LOT of negative thoughts toward the e9 in this forum
as I'm sure you know. My guess is it's largely due to the marketing
methods (and prices) of the 'brand' names mentioned in your post.

Assuming the D1 and D2 models are not drastically different, the
experience with my Smoke 51 should be acceptable provided a
reliable source of affordable supplies are available.

(Paying the very high prices for new pre-filled cartos from Smoke51
is not an attractive prospect to me. I like bargains.)

The jury is still out. But I have found a supplier of Cartos that are
far better than the pre-filleds from Smoke 51. So I may stick with
it a while before switching models.

For anyone who happens on this thread...

If you're here in the ECF you'll quickly learn the KR808-D1 is a much
better choice both in price, options and availability.

I agree and to not recommend the D2.

If you already have one, that's another story.

I have the D2. (Red Dragon) I bought a battery from LeCig and it works great. It's longer than the original I got with the Red Dragon, so it has a bit more power and lasts longer when charged. I use it all the time.

I'm currently having an issue with carto's however. I bought some blank D2's from azsmokefree.com. They're much harsher on my throat than the original Red Dragon cartos. Whatever juice I put in, it vapes way too harsh. Still searching for cartos that vape more like my original Red Dragon cartos.

Thanks Odyssey,

That's two for LeCig.

Sounds like you're going through the same process I am. Particularly with the cartos.

The pre-filled cartos from Smoke 51 (aside from the high price) work
very well initially. They have a light hit with a ton of vapor. Flavor is
not strong... but not a bad taste with the regular tobacco.

The other flavors do not last as long. My first cartos were menthol,
and they dryed up/burned up fast. The vendor reps even admitted
they experienced the same shorter life span with flavored cartos.

My next step was to get some juice and try to keep the cartos
from drying out. Bought the juice locally from a head shop that
sells a 3-piece (looks like a 510).

But when using that juice in the Smoke 51 cartos, the filler
material won't breath. It gets clogged... still allowing the
inner wick and even the filler material to burn.

Washing the cartos did little to help.

After 4 cartons (five cartos each) I have noticed variations
in them. Some of them had an almost yellowish filler material
while other were white. Some looked matted while others
were loose and homogeneous.

In short, most of the Smoke 51 cartos worked great until
they started to burn. Only a couple of them were useful for
extended use and multiple refillings.

The process of trying to get more use from the 'stock' cartos
from Smoke 51 had me trying different juice mixtures with
various levels of VG added.

I don't know what was in the pre-filleds, but it seems likely
that they are high in VG (perhaps 100%) with a bit of alcohol
added as thinner. That would account for the sizzle sound
and high vapor.

The juice from the head shop is likely 100% PG... and those
carts definitely don't like high PG mixture. The propolyne
seems to clog that filler material faster.

In addition to those variations/problems I started to notice
temperature variations dependent on the level of charge
in the batteries. A fresh battery caused the cartos to get
hot quickly and create an off taste.

Sometimes that taste was so nasty I could not vape it
with a fully charged batt. The hot vape always came
with a harshness.

Once the battery voltage returned to normal (after several
vapes on a fresh cart), they cooled back down and the
flavor/harshness returned to normal.

Needless to say it was frustrating and the primary reason
I started looking for another source of batteries. I thought
a new batt might clear up the problem if it regulated the
voltage better.

Good news....

I found the problem with the batteries causing them to
get so hot.

The air hole were clogged.

I thought the lack of air flow was a problem with the
cartos. Some do flow better than others, but it was
the batteries actually causing the bigger problem.

After cleaning the holes, the temp cooled down and
these are vaping like a champ.

With the new blank cartos I'm using, this would likely
stand up against most any D1... except a HV with
and HR carto.

That's a lot of information, but most of it relates to
issues that could cause a harshness with your cartos.

Some suggestions:

1. Make sure the batteries are clean and that the holes
in the terminal end are not plugged.

2. Add some VG to your juice mix. It increases vape and
should reduce harshness (TH).

If those don't correct the problem with the azsmokefree, then
it could be that those cartos have low resistence leading to
higher temperatures and harshness.

I was trying to duplicate that original vapor from new Smoke 51
cartos, but have stopped trying. I think they engineered their
cartos to deliver a 'tobacco smoking simulation' so it would be
a much like smoking a cig as possible.

Since they are marketed to existing smokers, that approach
would lead to more sales.

I'm not trying to replicate smoking any longer. I'm going for
cool, flavorful vape in a carto that does not burn.

BTW... the cartos from China are working very well. Refilling
them regularly and not one has shown any signs of burning.

Sorry this was so long. There are soooo many factors that
affect the vape quality and I did not want to leave any out. :~)

No, that's fine. I like long, thorough responses.

Most of what you said makes sense to me, and I find that I've experienced the same things. I really do think the harshness I'm getting from my blank cartos (aszmokefree.com) is in fact, a carto issue.

What brand of blank cartos are you currently using? You said they're working for you? I see some on lecig, (same place I got the nice battery) so maybe I'll just order those unless you have a better suggestion?

The cartos I'm testing now were ordered here:

https://e-cig.com/shopping/shopexd.asp?id=572

While their other prices appear very competitive, their
carto prices are about typical.

These cartos look exactly like the Smoke 51 cartos.

The inside is much different. The wick is seems to be
a more sturdy construction that remains aligned and
flows better, and the filler is probably less dense than
in the Smoke 51 cartos.

You might try the ones from LeCig, since their D2 batteries seem to
have acceptable reviews. I plan to try their cartos next myself.

Yes, our very first order was an "E9" from E-cig.com... then came here and found they were not a well regarded retailer. After a little research, we soon discovered that reliability and availability of parts was a big issue for the E9. Family members soon purchased the auto D-1 batts from a local LeCig retailer and were pleased with it, so we switched over to a KR808D-1 kit as soon as we could. (and "we" refers to my spouse and I, although I don't vape, I have done most of the shopping and research on his behalf) :)

Here's my 2 cents worth: I also got a GreenSmoke Starter Kit - high as hell, but it vaped nicely. After happening onto this Forum (thanks, all y'all who enlightened a noob like me) I learned about "Fun With Battery Adapters" and all that, and I got to playing around with them. Right now, one of my e-cigs is a M-401 batt connected to a KR808D-2 carto. Sure, it looks funny, but it sure vapes nicely - although the battery (it's from Exhale 02) doesn't last long. I have been vaping 7 1/2 weeks now, and have realized that - for me - the 510 cartos are for me. All the batts and cartos that are non-501s are getting vaped up and will not be replaced. My plan is to get the LeCig KR808D-1 batts and the GoodProphets 510 Mega batts and stay with that. I already have nearly all the adapters I need to make the transition.
This is fun - vaping is sure a lot more of an adventure than analogs ever were!
To everyone here - "Happy Vaping, All Y'all!"
Finally... "Vape Tha Planet - Smoking SUCKS"
Just sayin'
