Around here, smoking was never considered a "masculine" thing to do. Some types of cigs were more frequented by men (reds), but I've never heard a comment about smoking being manly at all. Most people I knew growing up smoked, boys and girls.
Now as a girl, however, I do remember several occasions where people would try to encourage me to quit by emphasizing how much less "pretty" I'll be - I'll have ugly surgery scars, I'll have stained yellow teeth, I'll get wrinkles (who doesn't get wrinkles anyway??)... the yucky part about all that was that these were always, ALWAYS, comments made to me when I was a teenager by old men

in other words, the people who apparently valued my beauty the most

gross!
On a side note, the dumbest thing I've heard about the coolness of
vaping is from my one friend who says that the modern, ego-style vaporizers that are popular around here "look stupid"

he stands by blus and other
cigalikes because he thinks they look cool... needless to say he still smokes
