The Summer of 1968 my friend and I traveled from California to Chicago, coinciding with the Democratic National Convention that year. Being long-haired, guitar-playing, VW Bug-driving hippies, we were, of course, the center of attention by the local constabulary who, undoubtedly, considered us trouble-makers and made us feel less than welcome.
While there, we decided to partake of the "Old Town" district's night life. We flitted from bar to bar, having a beer in each establishment. We went to one that had a live show, on a small riser, and had a 4-5 piece band and a black middle-aged woman singer. She started her performance with her hit song "You Ain't Nothin' But A Hound Dog" and I realized we were in the presence of genius! Then she broke into "Ball and Chain" and many other hits. Needless to say, we stayed there the rest of the evening.
It was one of the highlights of our trip to be sure. You just never know who you are gonna run into when you're not expecting it!
So, you musicologists: Who was this lady.
Hint .. she was often accredited with Janis Joplin developing her singing style.
Hint: she recorded with such greats as Muddy Waters, Lightnin' Hopkins, BB King and others
Another hint: She was from Montgomery originally, a Bama girl and church singer.
OK, another hint: Her name was Willie Mae

Oh, we have a few of those already, Hank, mostly in the vets forum, though. When we have a "turning" in the Pre-vets thread, it can run late too, especially when the west coast crew checks in.
Well yea those are no good for us non vets and the threads are to big to find the rest..... A new social group for late night would be cool..... Who could i talk to about that i wonder?????
Social group threads are fun, Hank, but it has been my experience that they just sort of happen and are not really planned. Although management may not agree as they blame me for starting the j0kers.
