Yeah, a knife could break off and spread the hurty. If you're just having trouble opening the screw lid, I usually find it helpful to put a towel over the lid before I muscle the lid off. If the lid is a little moist, that messes up my grip and is usually the cause for failure. The towel fixes the moist, slippery part. The rest is muscle. Hell, I don't think you really qualify as a guy, despite what the birth certificate says, if you can't open a jar no matter what. 
I always have a miserable time trying to break the vacuum seal, so I just focus on getting a good dry grip and leaning in to it.

It is a can bob I actually own a jar opener every since I lost most of the grip in my right hand it really comes in handy

That's why my keychain has a can opener on it, my pocket scissors (so I can run with them) has a can opener on them and my SOG multi-tool has a can opener on it. I really rarely have need of a can opener, but both times in my life I needed one and didn't have one I really needed one and nothing else would do. Even a hatchet
