OK first let me apologize for not reading EVERY post. I do understand how annoying it can be to answer the same question over and over. I've been researching e-cigs for a couple weeks now and dont feel any closer as to what to purchase. I'm learning reviews are like a-holes everyones got one. Everytime I think Ive decided what product I'd like to try I read something negative about it. My eyes and head are hurting from trying to find what product to buy now.

That said, I currently smoke a pack of marlboro lights a day give or take. I used to smoke menthols so flavor wise I'd like to try both initially. reading reviews I was considering the Blu or White Cloud. I dont know if I should get the ready filled cartridges now or refillable (cost/taste difference). I'd like to say I'm kind of a do it your-selfer but I have young kids and having liquid nicotine around makes me a bit nervous. I'd prefer a long battery life for the convience of going places or would just having several batteries on hand be better? I'd like to keep my initial investment under $100 USD.

If anyone could steer my course a bit here(possibly some links) it would be greatily appreciated.

Thank you for any insight.

For someone that smokes around a pack a day, the blu, white cloud, or any what are called 'superminis' just isn't going to produce the vapor and hence, nicotine that you'll need. So start looking at the 510, KR808D-1, 901, 801 in all the various forms - regular kits, Joye stick, eGo/Tornado. Short of a mod, the eGo or tornado will give you the best vapor with the longest lasting battery. It is a bit wider than the regular batteries but will last literally hours longer and obviates the need for a PCC or even a Passthrough (although sometimes a passthrough is nice to have if you're stationary or in a car for long periods of time - it simply saves on battery life).

With the advent of 510 cartomizers, that increases the value of having a very good atomizer to begin with and now with the capability (without adapter) to screw on a cartoz as well.

And once you've experienced the vapor and flavor and nic and throat hit you can get from an eGo/Tornado, then the considerations on size dissapate rapidly. Of course you would need something to compare it to, but that's what the 'ask the vets' forum is for ;-) ... to draw from experience you don't yet have.

Another good choice would be the Janty/joye stick - a small box mod, fits in the palm of your hand, doesn't 'look' like a cigarette and good for stealth vaping (except when you exhale) using an 801 Low Resistance atty. A really good combination.

That said you could start off with a regular kit - almost all of us did and we lived! But many now had they had the choices that exist would have gone right to a true 3.7v mod or an High volt mod or the eGo/tornado right from the start.

It is a bit overwhelming, isn't it? I am surprised that you "been researching e-cigs for a couple weeks" and yet are "considering the Blu or White Cloud." Well, I guess you haven't been researching here on ECF.:)

I am quite familiar with the blu (based on second-hand, not very positive information), but this is the first I've heard of the White Cloud. I just visited their website: $249.95 for a starter kit?! That is three times what I have regarded to be an absurd price.

Thank goodness you found your way here before making your decision. You can get a very good starter kit (for any of the best models) for around $40 ... and certainly keep your total initial investment well under $100.

I just posted a review of the three models I think most deserve a new vaper's consideration. There is very little controversary about two of my choices (the Joye 510 and the Kr8); the third will depend on who you talk to. I believe that the information provided in the review will help you to make an informed decision. Certainly do not hesitate to supplement that with the wealth of information, reviews, and opinions here on ECF.

As for "ready filled cartridges...or refillable": You don't have to make a final decision about that yet. Most of the starter kits will come with prefilled cartridges, but all them them are refillable. You definitely will need to supplement the starter kit with e-liquid (at least 30 ml, preferably various flavors in sample-sized bottles), so that you can do that refilling. [Just keep the e-liquid in the same type of secure location that you keep other items you wouldn't want your kids to get into.]

Also make sure you start with at least two atomizers and two batteries (some kits include only one atomizer). [One of the models, the Kr8, uses something called "cartomizers" instead of atomizers; start with 10 of those.]

Some might recommend that you go with one of the more expensive units (really enhanced versions of the basic models) or add in accessories (e.g., PCC or PT). [EDIT: I see that Kent has pointed out the strengths of those in his post. And he is not wrong.] However, I suggest that you start with the basics; find out if you really like that model, before investing more in it. This will not be your final order of vaping products.;)

Enjoy the adventure!

The guys gave you great suggestions so I'll just add these points for consideration:

With small children around, I understand your concerns with the liquid. A Vaultz or similar locking box (the camera size should do) is great to keep little hands out of things. You can find them at Target and Walmart as well as on eBay. This is a Vaultz:

Purchase enough liquid to last you a while (most people use 3-4ml a day, especially when first starting out) so purchase a few flavors (a tobacco, a fruit and menthol are good to try out when you first start out). I really enjoyed RY4 (caramel flavored) and 555 (peanut flavored) tobacco and had Cherry and a strong menthol in a slightly higher milligram for when I was craving a cigarette. It really helped. I love VaporStation's Mentha menthol liquid. Here is a thread with some more menthol info.

Be sure to order liquid at the same time as your kit and try to keep enough for a month's worth of vaping on hand. Plan on 120ml a month minimum to start and adjust as you get a better idea of your use.

The prefilled cartridges that come with a new kit are NOT good enough to vape through more than an hour without being refilled and you'll need liquid right away to refill/top off your cartridge AND to put on your new atomizers before you start vaping to get them going right!! Do see the Model Specific Discussion portion of the forum for how to start off with your new atomizers. If you use the liquid correctly, you'll never experience the burnt taste and the atomizer will last a good long time.

Also, do buy a few extra atomizers to have just in case. All the parts wear out eventually but you can expect them to run for a decent amount of time for once you learn to use them and keep them wet properly with the e-liquids.

Welcome to ECF and vaping!
