Does anyone here know if the battery chargers that come with the "kits".........I have GreenSmoke, V2 and Lux from Modern Vapor..........are the "safe" kind?? I'm pretty new to this, and don't really know much about the internal workings of batteries, really don't think I will be going out to get multimeters, whatever they are, but sure would like to know if what I have now is considered "protected" batteries and safe. My family has been sending me dire warnings because of this news, and I am explaining that this man was likely doing something dumb with batteries, but it's starting to piss me off after hearing all the warnings about cigarettes, now finding this which for me is nothing short of a miracle, having smoked for over 40 years, and now this! Sorry for the run-on sentences..........just a bit freaked about this.

The batteries from this incident are not like the ones that come with the cigarette look-alike e-cigs. These batteries are separate from the PV.

Here is a battery of the type that was found on the scene at the recent FL incident:

They are charged in a charger similar to one of these:

Yup, probably not the USB chargers that come with the kits. For those that use e-cigs with self contained batteries, DO NOT get your chargers mixed up. A charger for a 510 mini might look like your eGo charger. But it ain't.

Tomcatt,
good post.
I especially like the wide range of brands and capacities of those 3.6/3.0 flip flop batteries :)

I heard a report of this on the local morning radio today. I hated to hear it, because it only fuels the skepticism about these devices.

My position on this matter is this: Although I am deeply saddened by this isolated occurence, I'm aware of multitudes of e-cig users who have never had a similar incident. The laws of averages are in our favor regarding exploding batteries.

My thoughts and well wishes go to the victim of the accident.

Could you please give us the source of this information about the batteries found at the scene? I think we could all use some hard facts this point.

+1, I have seen a few posts mentioning that he was using stacked batteries in a mod. These posts seem to have originated from a single post from a forum member stating that he had been in touch with the fire dept and they had given him details of cr123 type batteries found in the same room as the explosion. I think more info is needed before everyone presumes it was an 'unsafe' mod that resulted in the accident.

My apologies if I have missed information already posted.

Wow...I thought when my battery exploded it was an isolated case! About a month or so ago I had plugged it in to charge, and it had only been on charger for about ten minutes. I heard a noise like "a pressure cooker" steam release valve. Ladies, you know what I am talking about...its when you are pressure cooking meats and the little knob on top helps release the steam.
I contacted the place where I bought it esmokeclub.com and they replaced it and they acted as though this was an isolated case. Now I am scared ----less to even to use the batteries I have! Here are the pics I sent to the company. BTW...I have a burnt spot on my counter from the battery exploding. My house was full of the nasty smelling smoke fumes and I had to rush the bottom of the battery outside and throw in a water puddle and the thing kept burning!!! WOW!! Does anyone have any idea where I can buy a good rechargeable battery???

I've had near explosions with Ego's (2 of them from one vendor out of 3).. They start with heating up, then a distinct lithium smell.. (you'll know it when you smell it)...I got them into the lake behind my house before they exploded.. There seems to be some warning time with Ego failures. But still.. It's happening too often.

Here is the name of the battery that blew up you see the images I posted above. I'm pretty sure these are generic and I WILL NOT buy those types again. Any suggestions on where I can purchase a good kit with better battery would be appreciated:

T-Rex 650mAh

The charger was "melted" on the battery and I could not get it apart. Here is the name of the charger and wall adapter:
Wall Adapter Type:Standard 0.5 AMP
Charger - USB Charger with Cord

PS - No, cap did not come off - Look at pic:

Breathing in the fumes from a vented/exploded li-ion battery is incredibly dangerous, almost just as bad as the explosion.

Definitely another thing to keep an eye on if this happens to anybody else, do not breath those fumes if possible! (pretty much common sense, but in a crazy situation like an exploding battery, it tends to slip the mind to vent the room/area ASAP and try not to breath anything in).

Scarey stuff perkiekat, glad you are ok.

I think it deserves its own thread though, posting details here could confuse people looking for information on what batteries the gentleman from Florida was using when it blew in his face.

Ok, I have read the stickies on batteries and some other articles. But honestly I would REALLY like someone's take on the safety range of batteries/devices. Something like is pass through>sealed>mod tube>mod box>hooked up to a car battery by a monkey safe wise... I am not looking for someone to promise me that xxx battery won't explode, just would like to know a scale I guess.

And I am trying to keep up with all the battery information but honestly my husband is in the next room in agony from his last round of chemo and I am trying to juggle and understand some new meds for my daughter's condition and my Dr, for fun, decided to lower my medication dosage. Honestly this news story makes me want to curl up in a corner and cry or go down to QT and by a pack.... I know, bad idea. Just don't have it in me right now to become an expert in ecigs and batteries. So I would be very very grateful if someone could put together scale for end users like me who are trying to stay away from analogs, not re-invent the wheel.

Thank you!
Z.

That's fine. You can do whatever you like with my post. I just wanted people to be aware that this does happen and thank you for stating you are glad I am ok from the ordeal. I appreciate it and I rest my case. Have a great day!

Aww perkiekat, I didn't mean any offence :)
And i couldn't do anything with you post, I'm just a regular forum member.
What I meant was we should be giving any defective battery cases their own thread so that it's easier for members to find information on what battery/device combos to watch out for.

And I really am glad you are ok, it would have scared the **** out of me, that's for sure!

Do most folks that have had a negative event with an e-cig feel that members would try and find something they did wrong and turn it around to look like their own fault?

Could that be the reason that several examples are surfacing. Some from forum veterans. I would like to think that if there was some e-cig, battery, exploding atomizer, a member would post if for informational purposes.

Maybe some of us are a little harsh when responding.

I lurk here a lot. I don't know if I've even ever posted. I just want to remind everyone of something. This is terrible, no doubt about it, and I truly hope that this man recovers as best he can. My thoughts are with him and his family. Whether it was caused by a mod, bad QA, or whatever other reason, this should not drive anyone away from vaping. I know it's scary to read something like this, but everything you do in life is a gamble. Remember, this happens with all sorts of devices using Lithim Ion batteries. Your cell phone could explode at any point. Your laptop could explode at any point. That doesn't mean people stop using them. People fall asleep with burning cigarettes and burn down their homes.

It's fair to take safety precautions, such as not using cheaply made knockoffs, using proper charging procedures, etc, but that's a given with any potentially dangerous activity or device. Every time you get in your car you're gambling that you won't be hit by a texter or a drunk driver. Every time you walk outside in the rain you gamble that you won't be hit by lightning. This sounds terrible, but it's life. We always do what we can do mitigate the risk - wear a seatbelt, don't walk around under trees in a thunderstorm, take proper care of your electronics. These things will happen no matter how careful people are. Just remember how uncommon it is, relax and enjoy your life. Some things are out of our control.

Happy vaping and well wishes to the victim.
