Tonight on my local late news channel "TV6 Marquette Mi", did a report on E-Cigarettes, at the end they stuck in there that E-Cigs use a chemical found in anti-freeze. I couldn't stand it so I wrote up a letter to the Editor. Here it is, let me know if i messed up or used any mis-information. I was trying to be more informational than a just a rant.

Dear Editor,
I have to reply to your news report on E- Cigarettes. Theinformation about containing a chemical that is in anti-freeze is very misleading, The chemical used in E-Cigarette is Vegetable Glycerin and Propylene Glycol it is NOT Diethylene Glycol which is used in anti-freeze and is deadly poisonous, it’s a Different Animal all together. E-Cigarettes consistof only 3 basic ingredients:
1. Vegetable Glycerin and or Propylene Glycol (USP foodgrade)
Used in asthma inhalers, nebulizers, Cake mixes, salad dressings, soft drinks, popcorn, food colorings, fat-free ice cream, sour cream, hand lotions, hair conditioner, soap, you'd find it all through your house if you read labels.

2. Nicotine. (Addictive but not necessarily bad for you, it does have Health Benefits).
Stanford study showed that nicotine actually boosts the growth of new blood vessels; Alzheimer's patients maintained their cognitiveabilities longer and sometimes even recovered lost cognitive function. New Studies show Nicotine prevents people from getting Parkinson’s disease,

3. Water Soluble Flavoring (USP Food Grade)
Used in bakery shops, Candy Oils, etc....

That's it. People aren’t Smoking "Anti-Freeze" or better yet, tobacco that kills 400,000 people a year with 4,000+ toxic chemicals that the FDA allows. It's just flavored water vapor with or without nicotine. No burning, no smoke, no more dangerous than eating cake icing with a nicotine patch on. It's misleading information that is being passed around. E-cigarettes have been around now for over 7 years and in that time nobody has died from one.

I've smoked for over 30+ years and have tried to quit multiple times by every available means out there, I'm over 6 months smoke free and never even noticing any withdrawal symptoms, no weight gain, I can now smell better than I ever have, I can go upstairs without losing my breath, can run more than 50 feet, I don't hack up every morning like I have for thelast 10,950 days, etc... Easley tens of thousands x-Tobacco Smokers to date have quit smoking tobacco with an Electronic vaping device (E-Cigarette). Do a little research and you'll understand.

Let me know what you think.

Thanks
David aka McMongo

It's a good letter but do you actually think their going to rerun the story..not likely..your whispering at a rock concert..and actually the food and draconon administraition(FDA) said there was trace amounts of ingrediants used in antifreeze..trace amounts.. thats where they are getting that information i just the tactics they use in fear mongering when they don't understand something.E-cigs are getting more and more popular and the attacks are going to get worse.

McMongo! Fabulous You! Thank you for fighting!!!

Although vape-addict may have valid points, but... roadkill obviously has a great tactical mind:

No, but if you can provide them with lead/info for a story that they can run where say X is trying to discredit Y for $ gain or...

Spin is effective, use it. Make allies by finding how they benefit.

Easy? No. Worth it? Absolutely!!!

[note: McMongo, you sound like someone that's needed in, and would enjoy, the legislative threads :)]

They probably won't rerun the story, but they can post it up in their editorial section. Will keep it updated.

I can easily get into a 10 page discussion/reply about all the information, miss-information, follow the money, etc... But I thought at this point in time be better to explain the basics of what Vaping is. Hopefully this might entice people to do a little research on their own instead of just echoing what big brother is feeding them.

@MM,

I played with it a little, making it more acceptable to editors.

Dear Editor,

I have to reply to your news report on e-cigarettes. The information about containing a chemical that is in anti-freeze is very misleading, the base liquids used in an e-cigarette are glycerine and propylene glycol - not Diethylene Glycol which is used in anti-freeze and is deadly poisonous, it’s a different animal all together. E-cigarettes contain only three basic ingredients:

1. Vegetable Glycerin and or Propylene Glycol (USP foodgrade)
Used in asthma inhalers, nebulizers, cake mixes, salad dressings, soft drinks, popcorn, food colorings, fat-free ice cream, sour cream, hand lotions, hair conditioner, soap; you'd find it all through your house if you read labels.

2. Nicotine
Addictive but not necessarily bad for you, it does have health benefits for many. A Stanford study showed that nicotine actually boosts the growth of new blood vessels; Alzheimer's patients maintained their cognitive abilities longer and sometimes even recovered lost cognitive function. New studies show nicotine prevents people from getting Parkinson’s disease.

3. Water Soluble Flavoring (USP Food Grade)
Used in bakery shops, candy oils, and so on.

That's it. People aren’t smoking "anti-freeze" or better yet, tobacco - which kills about 400,000 people a year with 5,300+ chemicals, many of which are toxic - and that the FDA allows. It's just flavored water vapor with or without nicotine. No burning, no smoke, no more dangerous than eating cake icing with a nicotine patch on. It's misleading information that is being passed around. E-cigarettes have been around now for over seven years and in that time nobody has died from one.

I've smoked for over thirty years and have tried to quit multiple times by every available means out there, I'm over six months smoke-free and never even noticed any withdrawal symptoms, no weight gain. My sense of smell is better, I can go upstairs without losing my breath, can run more than fifty feet, I don't hack up every morning as I have for many years...

To date over two million ex-tobacco smokers have switched to a better alternative with a Personal Vaporizer (E-Cigarette). Please carry out some research, especially regarding the long list of professors of medicine who have recommended e-cigarettes, such as Profs. Siegel, Rodu, Bergen, Phillips; doctors such as Drs. Laugesen, Ross and others. Also of course the doctor' groups such as the AAPHP and the ACSH.

Yours sincerely,

David

Air has toxins that are dangerous to humans. Its all wordplay folks and the media has that down to a science. If you break anything down long and hard, you will find toxins, including air and water. I will tell you where all this crap comes from: big tobacco. Who owns the news stations? Who is the parent company? And they are an umbrella company for whom? Turtles all the way down here folks and just like the oil companies stifle innovation, so does big tobacco. "Whispering at a rock concert" indeed! Great expression! There are a lot of people who don't want this technology to become mainstream. Hence, no big studies, no big marketing and we remain a niche, saving our own lives, much to their chagrin.
