Well I've been at this for a while and have decided to move up from my MVP2 and my Coolfire II to9 a mechanical mod. Not planning to subohm yet but want to in the future. Looking for something relatively low price and easy for beginners to mech mods to get the hang of. I've been looking at a Nemesis clone or a Smoktech Magneto. Anybody have any suggestions or other good mods to look at for me to start out with?

Check out the atomo.

The magneto v2 was my first mech. It's huge, and the spring loaded battery contact doesn't allow it to handle deci/sub ohm coils very well.

The nemesis is widely used for a reason.

Only mod I have I wouldn't recommend to new users would be the 4nine. The hybrid 510 connection could be dangerous if you have an atomizer with a short pin.

recommended this one earlier today to someone else, the Atomo V2 at fluid vapes for 30 bucks...it has a magnetic recessed firing switch w/locking ring, 3 solid tubes for your diff batts, double adjustment pin on the 510, one for the atty and the other for your batt adjustment....very nice solid Mod for the price that hits well and looks good...check it out

Nemesis is great, so is the magneto, if you get a nemmy try and get a hcigar clone. As for power output vs resistance, heres a chart.

sub_ohm_chart.jpg

Any of these batteries will be plenty safe for non sub ohm vaping and safe for sub ohm as long as you dont lower than what the chart says.

My main thing is, how do I know my power output so I can get my resistance right? Like, I can set it with my MVP and my Coolfire, but mech mods aren't button adjustable so I'm not sure how that works. Really don't want it blowing up in my face.

Get a kick for your mech; you adjust the power on the kick.
A complete nemesis includes a 15mm short tube for the kick.

i use a (DMM) digital multi meter to check my battery voltage and an ohm meter to check coil resistance and use Sony VTC5 30 amp batteries.......if you stay within or preferably below your battery's limits when sub-ohming & recharge your batteries when they drop to a certian level you should be fine, if not subbing you should be ok.... i usually recharge my batteries at 3.6 volts.......a study of ohm's law is highly recommended

Sweet, thanks. There are shops in my area that can teach me how to use it safely and everything but this is a much easier place to ask as I rarely have spare time to visit that particular shop.

err... just remember the primary motive of a shop if usually to SELL.

Always good to check here first; it's Free.

Yup, that's why I came here first. I'm thinking I'll go with a Nemmy, I've always liked them. Local shop has the hcigar for around $50.

I started with a nemesis, then picked up an atomo and a 4nine. I love all of them. The nemesis was definitely the best place to start though. The design is simple to understand and play around with, the switch is easy to disassemble and put back together. You can get some magnets to upgrade the button too which is a satisfying and cheap little project.

May I humbly suggest a Reo? Using a bottom fed atomizer with a mechanical mod is just incredible. I had a guy mod my Trident into a bottom feeder (dripping without dripping) and it's just incredible. This is what my setup looks like

Oh and that's my Stingray clone next to it. Another good choice for a mechanical mod

Check at the store whether you are able to connect it up with 18650 battery by itself, and, by adding a small kick tube, a kick module.

Alot of mechs out there don't have a kick tube so you have to buy a shorter battery just to use a kick.
Cheaper to have a kick tube than to have to buy another set of batteries.

Yep, us ReoNauts are quite a bunch. Lots of good guys there, and Robert O'Neil (Redeyedancer), the owner of Reosmods LLC and the creator of the Reo actively participates in the forum. Great device that seems to be the end all device for me. Add to that a respectable voltage drop for what it is, 3.8-3.9 volts on a fresh charge, and you have an awesome little box in your hands. Check it out!

Buy what looks good to you. Mechs are basically all the same with minor differences. Def look for one that has an adjustable positive pin (so you can get your atty to sit flush with the top cap as well as eliminate battery rattle) as well as a magnetic switch, or the ability to add a magnetic switch. Consider as well that once you start using it you will prob end up using mostly one size battery; 18350 have a pretty low amp draw so that would really limit lower ohm coils as well as not last very long vs. 18650's which will have a much higher amp draw which will last much longer and allow you to run lower ohms in turn getting much more power / watts. Telescoping mods will take most any size battery, but a one piece tube is just really sleek and nice looking IMO.

Make sure to get good batteries with 30'sh amp draw (I like the puple efest IMR 18650's w/ 30 amp draw and 75 amp max pulse draw) though Sony's are great as well. Buy a decent charger as well (You can get a Nitecore on Amazon for like $12)

And def look at Ohm's law | Steam Engine | free vaping calculators to calculate how many watts and amp draw based on you coil's ohms and volts (use 4.2 volts as that = a fully charged battery). Use ohms and volt fields to calculate amp draw to be sure that it doesn't exceed your battery's max amp limit.

If you have more questions, and you prob will (we all have more questions) then ask here on ECF, this is a GREAT community and we are more than happy to help.

-Best of Luck-

Not saying it's the one to get... but between the Stingray and Nemesis, I'd get the Stingray. Slightly shorter. Floating center pin. Magnet switch.

The thing with mechs is that it's mainly personal preferences and nitpicking that separate one from another. You won't really know what design features you prefer until you've played around with at least one. By the looks of them, they're just "a metal tube with a button". Once you've been using some all day, every day, you may develop a preference for certain things. Like how the button works. Center pin design. Locking mechanism, etc. That's when you know what to look for. Until then, your best bet is to go for one that looks alright and isn't considered utter garbage.

This.^^^

For a first mechanical, especially if you're a beginner and looking to try out things, it's hard to not go wrong with a few standard cheapo-o clones that are popular right now.

Nemesis, Atomo, and Stingray are well regarded for the most part and will get you vaping. They're popular for a reason. Minus the occasional dud, for the average price of below $40, they are a steal, and certainly won't break the bank to try any given model out. And as mentioned before, try to search out and purchase the Hcigar version of any given model if possible, as they are generally considered the most consistent in quality control in the world of cheap mass produced chinese clones.

While I pretty much only use a Reo everyday, and it's the most perfect device for me, best keep that suggestion tucked away until you get experimentation and "shiny-itus" out of your system, especially if you're unsure of what you want at this point and are on a budget. You may turn out to hate un-regulated mechs. You may turn into a hardcore collector, and suddenly desire a shelf full of 20 mechanicals in your living room. Now, if you happen to develop a passion for RDAs with your new mechs, and want that to magically become a hassle free, all day, take out with you anywhere vape; I'll see you in the Reo forum a few months from now. :D

One day at a time...

Cheers
