Honestly, The book Publishers really have nothing to worry about . . . There are many people who still have and want to purchase books that they can hold in their hands, especially so they can turn the pages . . . Matter of fact, I was one of them - I had a room that was a Home Library - it use to have 6 very large, 6 med size, 2 small book case filled with books from end to end and stacked high in every crevice / nook & cranny that they could fit in . . . However, I found the NEED to really downsize - so most of the books where either sold (at Yard Sale) or PIF/donated to a Library/school or people in NEED who wanted to read (except for a very few special books) . . . So - I am now one of the many people who are left to NEEDING & getting an eBook to read . . . .Just Sayin' . . . ;)

Good Morning, all. We are having a change in the weather with rain moving into the area. So this morning I don't know what I want to kick in first, the caffeine or the pain pills.

And for the past two weeks my numerous allergies are kicking my ....
I hate my allergies. With my back, I can't handle moving fast or being startled. It doesn't end there, I am not a dainty sneezer. When my allergies attack and I sneeze it causes horrendous back spasms. And it isn't just 1 sneeze it is usually 4 or 5 right in a row. They really are not a nice thing to happen and good thoughts are not what goes through my mind.
@Uncle, thanks for the information I am going to be signing the petition shortly.

FYI:

Save Access to Free eBooks . . .

Letter From The Broward County Library, FL:

Publisher plans to limit your access to eBooks (see Spoiler)

Dear Library Customer:

As a valued Broward County Library cardholder, it is important to let you and your family know about upcoming, unsettling changes recently announced by Macmillan Publishers that will severely limit your access to the company’s latest eBook titles.

Beginning November 1, Macmillan, one of the nation’s largest book publishers, is launching an eBook embargo. This means that all public libraries – no matter their size – can purchase only one copy of a new eBook in the first eight weeks after its publication.

This embargo puts your access to eBooks at risk.

Macmillan’s plan will significantly impact library users, especially those with more barriers and fewer resources. Readers with disabilities, such as poor vision and dyslexia, for example, are especially reliant on eBooks. Library users who rely on us for the latest books and materials will see longer wait periods just when demand is the highest.

This embargo is part of a growing trend among the nation’s biggest publishers to charge public libraries higher prices for eBooks and eAudiobooks and to restrict their access. The publishers’ reasoning is that they lose sales of eBooks to libraries as customers borrow titles instead of buying them. However, studies indicate the opposite. A study by Panorama Project showed that 50% of all library users report they “try out” books from the library, then buy their favorites as gifts or for personal libraries.

Right now there are an estimated 116,867 libraries in the United States. We’re joining them in asking Macmillan to reverse its policy so that we can continue to meet readers’ needs both online and in print. Tens of thousands of readers have already added their names to a petition launched by the American Library Association at eBooksForAll.org.
Make your voice heard on this issue!
Whether you are a customer with Broward County Library or any other public library system, we encourage you to stand with us and work toward a more just outcome for libraries and readers throughout the country.

Sincerely,

Kelvin Watson
Director of Broward County Libraries]

Although it was never really an issue of downsizing, I did, one day, look at my personal Library and say to myself :: "This is getting ridiculous .. I need to thin this out some .. why am I keeping all these books .. ??" .. so, I went thru the entire collection and just picked out any that I thought I might read again .. 3/4ths ended up in the "Probably not a chance" pile .. those got boxed up and ended up part at a VA Hospital and part at a VA Nursing facility .. let others get some enjoyment out of things that gave me joy ..

I suspect that Publishers, like any provider of Digital Content, are hip to the fact that's it not all that difficult to crack any eBook DRM encryption and are trying to somehow ham-fistedly exert control .. DRM can even time-limit access to an eBook for library lending ..

I'm not an eBook fan, although like all Digital Content, I understand the draw for folks .. the day will likely come some time in the future where Grandpa will have little Wheezer walk up to him and ask "What are you doing, Gramps .. ??" .. "Why, I'm reading a book, Wheezer .. " to which Wheezer will reply, "What's that .. ??"

I opted out also - but if I do "Hear" anything I will post . . . :thumb:

Oh & BTW: I believe I offered once before, I have a huge number of e-pub books (mainly SciFi) available on Google Drive (Another ECF member shared them with me a long time ago) . . . So if there is anyone interested - send PM and I will send you the links to the books (Alphabetized by Author and all their books in that file) so you can download them (might take awhile given there are that many - but actually worth it to some) . . . Just Sayin' . . . ;)

I haven't read a paper book in over ten years…since I discovered the Overdrive and the Internet Archive. I also haven't paid for a single e-book. All downloaded free. It takes such little space to store my 3,000+ e-books compared to the space required for that many paper books. And me being a greenie, it appeals to me that no trees lost their lives.

Hola .. :)

"This embargo is part of a growing trend among the nation’s biggest publishers to charge public libraries higher prices for eBooks and eAudiobooks and to restrict their access. The publishers’ reasoning is that they lose sales of eBooks to libraries as customers borrow titles instead of buying them."

This quote, for me anyway, flies in the face of any Logic .. since my old Buddy Benny Franklin founded the Library Company of Philadelphia back during my early years, Libraries have loaned books without restricting access .. and Publishers still managed to get along financially ..

How many countless lives have been improved thru the Library .. ?? I am one of those lives .. from the Bookmobile to the Library, thru Library Reading Programs, my access to the ability to get books enriched my life beyond what I can even say or imagine, most especially in my formative years ..

Petition signed ..

I totally agree. It's hard to imagine how to get through life without books!

Good morning. Yep, Fall is here. Our high today is only 63. We've still got lots of green out there, but the leaves are starting to turn and are falling. The deer are gathering daily under the white oak tree that seems to be having a bumper crop of acorns this year.
