I came from a bilingual family. When I was young, I was learning both French and English at the same time. That all changed as later on, the only people who spoke to me in French were my Grandmother and my Mother. Soon, I could just understand French, but not speak it well, since I never used it. My Dad has always refused to speak to me in French and still does. As a result, I only speak English now and dabble a little bit in French and Spanish. How I wish that I had grown up bilingual. :(

It's not all that and a bag of chips. All my grandparents came from Sweden and I grew up speaking it (more or less). When I lived in Sweden, I found out quick that the older generation did not speak contemporary Swedish. I looked like a fool for several weeks. My Mexican-descended friends have the same thing when they've gone to Mexico.

I took French in school, Jan and was miserable at it, I was used to the spoken Canadien French. The school taught Parisian French, it's a different dialect. Sometimes I ask my Dad, in French, if he will speak French with me. He always responds, "no" in English.

I have know a few people that never went to school and they are able to speak a few language fluently ,but if you ask them how much is 1 plus 1 they can't answer :(

Yup, during the Second World War, my Dad was assigned to escort a female member of the Free French forces, because he spoke French. But Parisian French and Canadien French are different. He had a hard time understanding her and she had a hard time understanding him.

I have come to think that the best way to learn any language is to just immerse yourself in it. I bet that if you moved to an English speaking community, you would be fluent quite soon, Lis.

I know, my big mistake was that i was trying to learn grammar first and never the spoken language , a real mess in my life
