The closest I've ever come to Jerry's hobby was just having an old Communications receiver, the Hammarlund HQ-160. This was before personal computers, LONG before the interwebs. I spent untold hours with that thing. DX'ing the planet ... in my case that meant I received it, since it was just a receiver.
I had to leave it behind when my ex & family had to leave Cripple Creek, Colorado with a space limitation of an old VW Van.

Computers were out of service, much of my life, Lis.
I don't know if I want to go back to radio, it's an old man's hobby and a dying hobby at that. I won't let my license expire though, I worked too hard to get it.
it is not about going back to the Radio it is about keeping it just in case of an emergency.......... you will be a hero if the radio is ever need it
I have a Hammarlund HQ-145X. It's a great old (1962) 12 tube receiver. I have a 4 ohm speaker for it, since the speakers for those rigs are separate and not built in. When there is a hurricane here, Hams play a big part in communications until regular connections are re-established.

You are right, Lis and they have already been needed, during tornadoes, floods, hurricanes, when the normal modes of communication have been disrupted. There are special groups of hams, who handle communication during those times. I was a member of one of those groups, during my early days in ham radio.
I thought ET's were confirmed because of crop circles being declared as genuine.
Yeah, that they were. And, even though I regret/resent having to have left mine behind ... in truth, I probably would've had to part with it in the time since then anyway.
EDIT: Oh, for a speaker I used a number of different ones over a period of time. One was an antique Wurlizer extension speaker. It didn't sound so good though, so I didn't use it long. I still have the speaker and one of these days I'm going to replace the speaker in it. It's a pretty nifty antique, IMO.
