That's sad that he lived that long and yet didn't survive :(

It broke my heart. But the Shelter Lady's Vet told her I must have done an amazing job, because Cardinals don't usually live for more than a very few days in captivity. So I had that solace. And it was amazing having him with me. Something I'll never forget. :)

Not all have been that lucky  And I always feel guilty if the cats kill a bird. I have feeders in my back yard and I feel like I 'lured' them to their death!

Maybe you could close in the opened section.

Night Glam and have a good trip!

ECF has really slowed down a lot so into lurk mode I go.

Night Tink, Dale, VG, and all beach peeps. :)

Read this on FB while waiting for ECF ball to stop going round and round.

How to get rid of ants.

1 empty water bottle
(Cut it down to about 2" tall)
5 Tbsp of baking soda
5 Tbsp of powdered sugar
3 Tbsp of water.

The very best way of eliminating ants is truly simple:

Take a small amount of powdered sugar (also called icing sugar) and mix it with an equal amount of baking soda (formally called sodium bicarbonate) and water.
Powdered sugar is essential. You cannot use the larger grains of sugar for this..

Mix the two powders together and then place small amounts against the walls or other areas where you would not normally walk but where you would normally see the ants.

The ants will be attracted to the sugar and will eat some of it and collect more to take home to feed others, so all of them will get their share.

The sugar and baking soda powders are similar in size and, once mixed together, the ants cannot separate the two items, so, as they eat the sugar, they will also ingest the baking soda, which they would otherwise never touch. This is the reason for using powdered sugar.

Once the ants eat the baking soda it will react with the formic acid in their stomachs and cause gas. The bodies of ants are unlike humans and they cannot eliminate gas so it will build up inside and eliminate them.

I need to figure out a way to do that. It already looks 'tacky' because I made the screens that are there.

I need to figure out a way to do that. It already looks 'tacky' because I made the screens that are there.

You could build a small wooden frame (or frames) that would fit snugly into the open areas, and use a staple gun to secure the new screen sections to it. Brad nail them into place if need be. Small 1x1 or 2x2 boards should do it.

Ewwww!!! JJ

Yup, it blows them up from the inside. Cream of Wheat can do this, if they eat it. Just sprinkle it dry on to the ant bed. It tends to work only the first time, if they eat it at all. It's better on black ants and even better on the tiny black ants. It doesn't work on red ants. I don't know why.

That recipe is probably better.

The bottom is made up of window screens I attached together (so I could "open" them and get to the back yard from the porch). The top portion I made using wood and screening. I need to redo the whole thing to make it look better and to close in the holes. But it was such a PITA to do what I did the first time… I dread the thoughts of re-doing it.

Does DH do that kind of work? Maybe he could help, or do it himself. :) (just a hopeful thought for you)
