Sister still has two inches of ice on part of her driveway and all of the sidewalk/front porch. I worry about her getting out there to shovel a path. She has COPD and is not supposed to be breathing cold air for very long.

When I tried to shovel the ice we had last week, it wouldn't budge! I ended up pouring hot water on the back steps to make it a little less dangerous to go out to take care of the dogs.

Yeah, your sister probably doesn't need to be doing that! People have also been known to have heart attacks trying to shovel snow. I hope she can stay in until it melts.

Yeah, you can use that one. We use feet veins (if pt isn't diabetic) if we can't get one in the hand/arm.

Do you usually have trouble getting IVs? Maybe the other day was just a bad day and tomorrow they will be able to pop it in without any trouble!

This is the second time I've had trouble at his office. The phlebotomist at my family doctor lab is always able to get one in my elbow area but it's difficult from the scarring. No - not a needle drug user, just sold a chit load of plasma when I badly needed money.

VG - it has to be on the right side where the doctor is. They've already punched both of the big veins in the top of my hand and tried a vein in my forearm twice. I guess the vein just collapses after he gets the needle in there. It burned like fire when he tried a test liquid to see if it would work.

Eeek! 8-o Sorry. You won't want to hear it, but I never have that problem.

That would be great!

The Blood Center here used to take my plasma, but never paid me for it. Their machine messed up my iron and I quit going.

I have heard of this. Never even thought of doing it but just how much do they pay you?

It really is a lot more difficult to get an IV into a vein than to draw blood from one. I can (almost) always get a 'flash' of blood…. but getting the catheter to go into the vein can be a problem.

As you are doing, drink plenty of water. Also, before he tries the IV, hang your arm down from the chair as far as you can. The gravity makes the blood fill the veins better. Also, if you could put some heat on the arm/hand (ie, if he has warm blankets in his office or if you could get those hand-warmers that you activate by squeezing) that might help.

Thanks - we have hand warmers left over from our trip. I'll try all of those things tomorrow!
