Mission creep. The FDA has no business responding to emergencies - that's what the CDC and other organisations are for (you can make your own minds up on how well they perform those roles).

If you consider that most drugs that ever make it to the market have undergone years of testing, then there ought to be few 'emergencies'. Food is pretty self -evident: never eat anything green ;)

Food, drugs. Not a power grab.

A quote from the article: "The commissioners, which represent more than three decades of FDA experience, said their next step is to come up with a bipartisan white paper for the next administration, no matter who wins the presidency".
Not sure what this would mean either. Bipartisan? Is ANYTHING the government does Bipartisan? If they want to be independent then why take a Bipartisan approach? They should perform their duties without bias or political influence. Just the facts-ALL the facts. This needs exploration.

No, no, no! The last thing the public needs is an FDA that doesn't have to answer to Congress! IMO, there needs to be someone that always and forever has the authority to say "No, you can't do that," to the FDA!

The commissioners want the agency to have either Cabinet-level powers or the autonomy of agencies like the Federal Trade Commission or the Securities Exchange Commission. They argued that FDA, which regulates more than a quarter of the economy and deals with critical food and drug safety, is harmed by bureaucracy, meddling politicians and confusing budgetary lines in Congress.

If they had autonomy, could something like Senator Johnson asking questions still happen? I want those 'meddling politicians' to continue to hold the purse strings and to keep meddling! I have to go back and read this again, I could be off base, but I about jumped out of my chair reading that article!

Who now controls the bureaucracy? They are smaller fiefdoms with "Tsar" heads appointed by the President with an agenda to "fundamentally change" the Constitution and its protections for the common man against the power grabs of the "elite". The last time I heard tsars mentioned, there was somewhere around 42?

Why hasn't Lois Lerner (IRS) gone to jail instead of retiring with a big fat pension you are paying? The Veterans Adm. has killed our vets by their ineptness and willful mistreatment. NO ONE in these positions are punished for any misdeeds against the Constitution......We no longer execute proven traitors to our country.

Could it be that so much power has been given over to the bureaucrats of a continually growing government that our Reps. and Senators are now powerless and do not even bother to read the onerous laws they pass?

The Executive Branch of our government has become too powerful and is getting more "El Duce" like with each presidency........... I fear for our future.

Evil is always searching for ways to be more evil. Look what they are trying to do to vaping. Do we want that monstrosity to have even more independence? The thing to do with the FDA is put them a few more layers down and lay off 80% of the employees. Correction, 90%.

The ones that most need to go are those hired from regulated industries. If that is only 10% or 100% so be it. Best thing that could (but never will) happen is to scrap the entire mess and start over.

So maybe it's campaigning(and the associated contributions) in general that should be done away with.

That's been attempted to various degrees from time to time and hasn't worked well. About the first 6 or 7 presidents didn't even "run" but were chosen by party leaders. No "campaigning" no speeches, no tweets lol... Back then the 'contributions' were from their party papers, and just as vicious - esp. 1800 election.

Well, campaigning, and the associated coverage, etc., is an industry in and of itself nowadays.

Yep. Again, no stopping it. About the best solution would be a flat tax or consumption tax ("fair tax") that would then take a supermajority in both Houses to change (ie increase :- ) That would eliminate 1/2 of the Lobbyists in DC. A Representative could say "Sorry, I'd really like to help you with some earmark increase (or decrease), but we can't do that with the flat tax."

Another would be take on the other half of the tax and spending schemes, with a balanced budget amendment, but that wouldn't be as effective as a flat tax. But again, the Representative could say, "Sorry, my hands are tied by the balanced budget amendment." Of course the reason why neither will likely happen is that would cut off funds to the Representatives for campaigns :- )
