Vapor production boils down to airflow and wicking. If you're coil is too tight, wick is prevented from delivering liquid to the coil. This is also hendered by liquid gunking up on the coil, preventing direct contact of liquid. If it is too loose, the coil isn't receiving liquid directly, and it is more or less just cooking the liquid, rather than ionizing it. Air flow mixes in with the ionized liquid to help create the pleasurable vapor.

Uneven heat distribution, by uneven coils and legs/end wire pieces, can inhibit vapor production as well.

Pictures/video will help.
