Ive been using 30G kanthal in the merlin as a single spaced coil at 11W and it does me nicely.

Now I've got a 26G micro coil in there measuring 1.18ohms….while firing the coil at 11W i noticed that the coil takes a long time to heat up and cool down…what watts should I be using?

This is why I like 30g wire... Fast heat and fast cool down.

Keep increasing watts until you get a good vape out of it I guess.

I only use 30g SS316 now, used to use Kanthal and NiChrome.
After a lot of experimenting I found SS works the best for me, it's easier to coil, not so springy like Kanthal or NiCr and SS coils last for months and can do temp control
Used SS316 26g, 28g, 30g, even 32g but found 30g the best. Not as hard wearing as 28g but not too delicate like 32g, a good compromise.
Like ricks said, 30g heats up and cools down quick, perfect for an M2L vaper

Do you use Steam Engine for your coil building?

Assuming the 30g coil is 1.5 ohms, at 11W that coil would provide you with a warm vape having a heat flux of around 260 mW/mm².
30g build details.

The 1.2 ohm 26g coil at 11W would only have a heat flux of 81 mW/mm² and provide a very cool vape. To get the same heat flux of 260 mW/mm² you would need to run the coil at 35W.
26g build details.

This is the build I have in one of my Merlins right now, SS316L 24g 10/9 spaced wrap at 50W.
It's a perfect heat/density build for me.
24g build details.

Hi Troll, you got me thinking. I use the heat flux info for all my own coil builds, but I've been happy so far using the Wismec SS notch coils in both my Merlin, and Merlin Mini. Wondering if Steam Engine can factor these notch coils, the same as a wire wind. I believe they are 5mm ID, and the ohms are listed as .23 ohms, but all my mods and meters usually show them in use at .26-.27 ohms. That may be due to the non-resistant "Nickle" lead wires they use to make the post connections.

They Vape great in the wide open build deck space in these tanks. Guess I'll have to look into this, and see if I can find a heat flux figure for these notch coils out of curiosity.

You would just need to calculate the surface area of the notch coil. ;)

I do indeed....wow, im not sure i want to do 35 watts just yet just for mtl....i have a style where i take 3 successive drags with every hit.....i can see the tank getting really hot if i do this ....guess i may have to stick with 30 and 28g for now.

Hehe…scratch that ^^^

Im vaping it now at 18W and a heat flux of 133 and don't notice any difference from my previous setup.

I was one of those who had seepage problems and a busted 510 screw before….i dismantled the whole damn thing and replaced all o-rings….even added one just below the barrel of the deck. Fit it all back together and its vaping like a champ. I will stress that you really have to liberally lube up those two o-rings where the top cap and base screw on…for a good seal. NOw my jfc and airflow rings have more tension in them….which i feel is a good thing…before, the afc spun quite freely.

The only other change i noticed is that the juice holes don't line up perfectly..when fully open….havent had a problem yet…..I haven't had seepage but won't comment definitively until Ive runs few more refills.

This time I used the wicking prescribed on the instruction leaflet with the tails barely intruding into the juice wells.

I had given up on this tank but its back…..one thing I will say is that the flavour it produces has really made me re-evaluate juices that Ive been unimpressed with before...

    Somewhere between here and there
I bought some of the griffin drip tips from FT not realizing that they aren't 510 drip tips. I was disappointed since I really liked the shape. Pretty close to the size of the Merlin tip. So, now should I buy a griffin so I can use these tips? Decisions, decisions....

guys…I am seeing some dark brown residue seeping into the tank via the juice holes…does that mean its time to rewick or recoil?

Flavour and taste are still intense and on point…i usually rewick every 3-4 tanks….is there a norm to do this?
It is probably time to re-wick and dry burn your coils if you can, or replace if you can't. How often depends on your juice (how much and what type of sweetener), wicking material, wattage, etc. I go 2 - 4 weeks (100 - 200ml) with rayon and diy juice that use little or no added (I use pyure only these days) sweeteners.

Cant believe i was at the point of chucking this tank a month ago….it was seeping annoyingly and then the 510 screw got busted so it was unusable. Had to wait a while before I could receive one . After stripping this down and putting it together I have used it ever single day with no issues except my fingers get liquid residue when I am removing and tightening the base… was also wicking it wrong before….ever since i followed the less wick principle it has been super.

I get the same thing now and again....can't really draw a cause and effect.
