Do I have to worry about that using kanthal wire or the notch coil that came with the Merlin? I am going to use that notch coil next when I rebuild it later today. I think it is like a .5ohm coil. Lavatube wouldn't work with it that low but I know the Pico will. Not sure what type of metal it is.
I always use TC mode on the pico with any SS coils. 3 fire button clicks to change mode then +/- to get the mode you want, one click on the fire to set it. (edit to add: If in temp mode....) Then you want to click the fire 4 times quick to be able to change the wattage down to the proper range for the ohm of your coil. It is maxed at 75w in TCSS by default which could cause you some burnt/dry hits. You will have to play around to find the combination of temp/watt that works for your build. I haven't run any SS coils in my merlin yet.

Those batteries will work. If they're old the only issues will be how long they can hold and take to charge. If you get annoyed at battery life, it's cheap enough to pick up some new ones. I have a pile of green Samsung 25Rs I use for everything, and I believe they were $4 each from Illum.

Yea I notice drastically lower life on the 1600mah battery but the other 2 will seem to last me a couple days. But with 3 I hardly ever find myself without a charged battery. When I get down to 1 left I throw the other 2 back on the charger.

Lol I just noticed I am a super member now. I feel so accomplished in life now. :)

Black glass on ss looks good.

That's exactly what I plan to do with mine! Black glass on SS and clear glass on black. :thumb:

It's like talking to a brick wall with this woman. She will believe her tobacco sales people over science. She is telling people that ecigs are more harmful than cigarettes...

She sounds like my husband. He insists that ecigs are worse than cigarettes and b!tches and complains about my vaping. He's an avid and over zealous non-smoker who just doesn't understand. I've been called stupid and selfish because of it, despite his refusal to even learn about it.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that my son told me that his elementary school's Health class teacher told them that e-cigarettes are just as carcinogenic as tobacco cigarettes.

BTW, this next one belongs in the W-T-F Wall of Fame: Last night I was at an outdoor concert getting my son an Italian Ice. The wind made my vape waft into the window of the concession and the woman said that she doesn't want my vape to affect the ices in the freezer. o_O

Lol you should have said something like "I hope your ice particles don't interfere with my vape flavor." Some people just are not that smart and you just got to laugh inside and keep moving lol.

Oh God. The WORST now is all the people who think that E-cigs are so bad cause they only hear on the news about the deeming FDA regulations and act like "see told you they just as bad as cigarettes" Like get a clue. The only thing i see as being bad is all these fake rated batteries going around, and people buying them thinking their builds can handle them. Thats the most dangerous aspect of vaping IMO.

About 6 months ago, I saw a TV news story on a guy whose pants caught on fire from e-cigarette batteries in his pocket. The news piece was about 15 seconds long. Not once did the reporter mention how this happened or how to prevent this from happening, so I'm sure that everyone now thinks that e-cigarettes are a fire hazard. :-x

It's scary how people are these days... It doesn't matter how much proof you give them, they just seem to ignore it. SMH

First time cleaning the Merlin. Anyone have any suggestions on how to clean the deck? I would think there would have to be some way to get the bottom plate or deck off so that I can clean in the area inside the air slots.
I just rinse mine under hot water and blow it dry with compressed air from my compressor.

Just put the notch coil in and was messing with it. I turned the Pico on for first time and hit the button and the dang thing was in temp mode and I think it dang near melted the coil. That thing was very bright red. Then it told me to press down. Need to get it into watt mode.

Can someone explain the difference between temp and watt mode. I know watt mode how does temp work. As far as I know I didn't notice a temperature sensor in the coil so how the heck does it know the temp?
The temp module is in the board. It won't let it the coil above a certain temp and will reduce the wattage to keep the temp lower. You still need to set your wattage though in temp mode so you don't go above the max wattage of your coil's ohms. It basically means you can't burn the coil and get a nasty burnt hit.

Okay I was just trying it at 15 W in wattage mode I have a 0.19Ohm notch in it. I'll be honest I've been vaping for over 2 years but always on the Lavatube with coils above 1.2ohm and basic under 10w settings. What would you recommend I set it at for best results on this coil? I can move up if it isn't enough but I need a good starting spot. Thanks.

0.2 ohm notch? Up the wattage. Start at 20, work your way up a few watts at a time, especially as it's a new coil and wick. You'll probably end up around 40W.

As to temp control, there is no actual thermometer. Rather, the chip monitors the resistance of the coil, which changes as it gets hot. By knowing the behavior of the metal used, it can extrapolate from that the temperature the coil is allowed to max out at. That's why choosing the right metal is important. The Ni profile won't work well with a SS coil. It gets way fancier than that, with custom curves and TCRs, but no need to go there now, and no custom curves on the Pico anyway.

Got your last post. If 15W and 145 C are working for you, enjoy it. Big difference from your Lavatube.

Yea, on my Lavatube now its a 1.7ohm and I normally set it at around 8W. And yes I have a external charger, its a Xtar charger. I have 3 1865 batteries they are kind of old, but 2 of them are 2000mah and the other is a 1600mah. I think those should work at the lower watt settings.
I would NOT use those batteries at all without letting us know what they are.

The Lavatube has a 2.5A limit and those batteries are probably 6A or even 4A. You should stop into a local vape shop and pick up a pair of batteries for the Pico.

These would work perfectly:
Samsung 25R
Samsung 30Q
LG HE4
LG HE2
Sony VTC4 or VTC5

You have to vape safe and older batteries that do not supply enough current are dangerous. It might be alright that you only vape at 10W. The day you let a friend try your Pico out with an atty that needs 30W+ then they might be in for a real nasty surprise. Do yourself a favor and get proper batteries for the mod.

Thanks I am still messing with it some more. Just got it into degree F mode.

Ps. I just noticed you joined a couple months ago and are already an Ultra member........Dang that was quick.

Either way you are very helpful with this. Thanks.
