I think most of the time when they say not to block the juice holes, that means.

1. Don't put the wick THROUGH the holes.
2. Don't compress the wick so much in the wick wells that juice can't wick. (Example would be somehow stuffing 5 3mm silica strands into the juice wells.)

Tip:
If I build a really large diameter coil and I need to use more wick to make it fit snug inside the coil (say I need 3 strands of silica) I will wick all 3 strands into the coil and cut one strand as it comes out each end of the coil. So I will only have 2 strands of silica wick that I will need to tuck into the juice wells instead of 3.

Some folks push their wicking AWAY from the juice holes, and have posted pictures of it. That's what I consider NOT blocking the holes. So on my first attempt, that's what I tried, but it leaked. My wicks come down and block the juice holes, meaning they fully cover them, not through them.

Is the cotton loose in the coil or snug?

It is definitely not loose I am just worried it might contract a bit once it absorbs some juice…or does it expand….Im not sure….if it expands or fills out a bit I should be ok.

I was quite underwhelmed by my coiling skills….problem is I used 30AWG which is so springy, my coiling tool just pancaked the thing….so I just hand coiled it on a screwdriver.

Rayon will contract a bit, while cotton will expand. Rayon should be tight in the coil with a bit of a squeak when you move the rayon back and forth in the coil. With cotton, you should be able to move it within the coil somewhat easily without it being too loose, so it has room to expand a bit without being choked off.

Augvape sends pics (or is it drawings) with the Merlin on wicking. I follow those. Wicks to the top of the juice holes though when you prime they will sag a bit. BTW I like my 5 wrap Clapton. I give it plenty of cotton just not too far into the juice channels. I also hated wasting juice. You can buy some plain ole VG cheap cheap at natural food stores and emporiums.

It's so weird how some people can wick one way and it works for them but others try it that way and it floods or you get dry hits.

When I wick your way I get dry hits. There's more than one way to wick a Merlin, that's for sure.

This happens all the time and I wick like you do. After I've vaped for awhile I can tell that the wicks are too long so I trim them back to the top of the hole and I'm good to go.

Yup. I say if you drop cotton into the bottom of the juice channels you just want to avoid making it too dense. You've got to leave some open space or you're creating a dam with saturated cotton. Wicking can be a funny business. Yesterday I wicked my Mage for about the 4th time and being worried about dry hits I thinned out the cotton too much at the juice holes. Result.... Leaking. Lesson... Use a mod you don't care much about when you are not sure on the wicking (in my case Innokin Coolfire).

If you mean the drawing from the included manual. Moving the wicking away from the juice holes is the ONLY time the tank ever dumped on me. So again, it's a matter of TRIAL & ERROR, with lots of variables to consider.

That's it! Yeah that does actually work for me. I do leave a bit of a thinned out tail though that goes well into the holes. I really really hate dry hits. May sound crazy but if I err I err on the side of leaking.

Could be. I use rayon most of the time but I have used cotton and I wick the same way.

Also you have different juice mixture ratios, and different air flow settings. So that will cause different results.

I've not had any problems with leaks or dry hits with the merlin.
I wicked it like I would any tank, the wick goes down past the holes touching them, into the juice cups on the base, nothing special other than I use rayon.
The merlin is the only tank I use, on a dna200 mod in power mode.
I mainly use drippers or bf atty's on my squonkers, the aeronaut is my favorite.
