I think most of the time when they say not to block the juice holes, that means.
1. Don't put the wick THROUGH the holes.
2. Don't compress the wick so much in the wick wells that juice can't wick. (Example would be somehow stuffing 5 3mm silica strands into the juice wells.)
Tip:
If I build a really large diameter coil and I need to use more wick to make it fit snug inside the coil (say I need 3 strands of silica) I will wick all 3 strands into the coil and cut one strand as it comes out each end of the coil. So I will only have 2 strands of silica wick that I will need to tuck into the juice wells instead of 3.
