I remember one of my father's last Christmases. He had always wanted a lathe, so my mother and we split the cost of the lathe and a lot of tools for working with it.

We had to keep it hidden from him, so we put it under a blanket in the back of my mother's station wagon for the last few days before Christmas. For some reason, my father needed to use my mother's car, so she and I snuck down and moved the lathe into the basement. (It was heavy). Then my father was going to do something in the basement, and we snuck down and brought it back out to her car. Next, he decided he needed the car again, and we had to sneak it into the basement again. This happened four or five times during the week leading up to Christmas.

On Christmas morning, while my father was shaving, my husband brought the lathe in and set it on the table so my father would see it when he came out of the bathroom. When he saw it, he started laughing about how many times my mother and I had moved the lathe that week. Little did we know, that while we were in the woodworking store, he had come in and seen us buying it and left so he wouldn't spoil it for us, and then used the car and went to the basement because he thought it was so funny watching us try to keep it hidden from him!

What ya need for the Holiday's is some crazy, fun, comedy like Fernwood Tonight...it started out from the old great show I loved called the Mary Hartman show! :)

I was a little thing, but I loved that show. My grandmother watched it, and she used to put my hair up in " Mary Hartman" braids. That's what she called them. I have so many good memories about my grandmother (who I called Momma, while she was alive) and seeing this reminded me of her. I haven't thought of that in years, so thank you for sharing :)

Oh Boy! Christmas in family was something one side didn't care to much for it. But my Swedish side went all out with Swedish Tradition.

Those were beautiful traditions Valkyrie.

I know what you mean about Christmas though. We had happy Christmases when I was little, then when I got married and moved away, we spent them with my husband's family, and there were nothing but fights and nastiness.

For the last few years of my father's life, we started going back to their house to celebrate. It was much better, and we made it fun, but still missed all the people who were gone.

The last Christmas with my father was while he was in the hospital, just before he died. I did his Christmas shopping for him, and we opened presents in his hospital room. After he passed away, we celebrated Christmas all alone with my mother in Sturbridge, then went out to see the kids and grandchildren in Rochester, NY.

My mother sold the house in Sturbridge, and last year was the first Christmas with her on the island. She didn't want to go out to NY for Christmas, and decided to spend it with some of her friends up here, so we went out and spent it with the kids and grandchildren.

The kids both work retail, so the time between Thanksgiving and New Years is their busiest time. Being managers, they both work opening to closing a lot. We love being with the grandchildren, and watching them on Christmas morning is wonderful, but there are no old fashioned holiday traditions like I was used to, so it's a bit sad for me.

I just keep being glad I have the grandchildren. Seeing how excited they are when we arrive, and knowing that our arrival is making their Christmas special because we are there, and being with them while their parents have to work, make it better.

The old traditions and generations are gone now, but I guess we have to adjust and make new ones.

edit: it still is sad though.

An annual tradition in the little town I lived in about a mile North of here... which was the stomping grounds of a lot of great surfers in the 60's!!

Very Cool!

We use to live to surf back in the early 80's. Too bad we don't have real waves here. MANY a weekend was spent sleeping in our cars, eating old Krystal burgers and waking at dawn to catch the glassier sets. Sebastian Inlet has the best swell...maybe 5 foot if you're lucky. Unless a hurricane is offshore.... ;)

I think this Lawn and Garden Center has done a Christmas Land forever. It is another place we never missed each year... at least once and generally several times. They have it set up with numbers in the stalls so you can easily go into their store and find items from a particular display... imagine that :) It is different each year... I mean completely different and always brings out the child in me. I will trek up to see it this year too and hit one of my favorite candy stores, Daffins, for some chocolate melt-a-ways. The one from 2013 that is about 5 minutes is better but this is the only one of this year's display I could find.

Very nice, Joan!

Things like that kindle the Holiday spirit for me too...but nothing beats seeing my 3 year old Grandson light up like a candle during the Holidays. The lights, the sounds, the smells that go with it...all awesome. He just getting to the age to where he knows what Christmas and Santa is about. Toys and "I Want".

At least he doesn't want a $400.00 phone....yet!
