I havent weighed a drop and im not assuming what it weighs... And the 1 gram per ml figure is an example to illustrate the idea.

I would be setting the "drops per ml" figure to show me "100ths of a gram per ml" instead. I would be weighing my ingredients to calibrate this.

That should work, don't see a problem there.

I do not know if this has been posted in here as I haven't had the time to look through all of it, but if you are using TPA Flavors, they have the Specific Gravity listed on their MSDS sheets here:

shop.perfumersapprentice.com - /msds/

Specific Gravity in this case is the mL->grams ratio. As an example, the one for Pineapple shows a SG of 1.0140 (at room temperature I believe). So you don't even need to do you're own measurements for TFA Flavors.

Mixing by weight is the best method, by far! Check my blog entry, it's really easy, clean and quick. The fact that it's not taking off is because none of the stickies here mentions it and all the "how to" posts written for beginners are using the "classic" way of mixing.
I think the way of mixing most people are using is scaring potential DIYers off because they don't feel like messing around with syringes and pipettes which all have to be cleaned when finished. Even a lot of the Veterans are still using these things. There are a couple of calculators out there which can do mixing by grams so there's absolutely no reason why one wouldn't use this method. I guess most of it is the "I'm used to the old way" attitude. Too bad those people are also passing it on to noobs.

This guy's message is getting lost in this thread. He presented this data back on page 2/3 of this thread. Read his blog:

Amen to that, rowdyplace..... I know that early on in this thread he even made mention to that effect. His blog has lots of info that keeps getting asking again and again. Not sure if it is OK to do this, but consider doing a cut / paste to Notepad or Wordpad or whatever for Apple users to have available it for easy reference.

That's exactly what I did. I cut me a copy and pasted it on my desktop.

Me too but I was not sure if it was in violation of any rules.... why I did that round about preface before suggesting...lol
Learning how to mix by weight for some reason is a tad daunting, especially using the new calculator. That thing is sooo complex compared to what is out there -- I need all the help I can get!! Not running down the calc. -- it's certainly all inclusive and can't think of much it doesn't offer.

I'm of the opinion that anything posted publicly here is pretty much being placed in the public domain. I think we should always show respect to the original poster, but the posted data is put "out there" with no expectation of privacy or ownership. A private message (PM) between 2 parties is possibly a different matter. I'm not an attorney, but I have dated several...(LOL)

Going to give the mixing by weight a try, should be easier for my aging eyeballs and easier to read in a dim truck.

Just a heads up, this is what I just ordered for a scale, looks like it is being discontinued but large capacity and .01 resolution. Interested in opinions.

That's a sweet balance and an incredible deal. A $200 balance for $68? I'd grab it quick if I was you, before they run out. If I didn't already have a similar balance, I'd definitely order it NOW!!!

The glass windbreak top is an indication of quality IMO. I haven't seen the likes of that in anything near this price range. Very nice feature. Mine is plastic, not near as good as glass. The sliding doors will work much better with glass. Not that I actually use my windscreen, but it looks cool and keeps the dust out. It's not necessary to use it unless you set your balance up next to a fan, outside on a windy day, or directly under a AC register. Two decimal places just aren't that sensitive. Now if you're using four decimal places, that's a different story. I do, every day at work, and even breathing on it will bounce the weight around.

Get it fast! best regards, larry mac

p.s. Oops, just reread your post and see you have already ordered it. Sorry. I think you'll really like it!

Yeah, thats what I thought too, grab it now! Obviously this is a discontinued model and they are gone, they're gone! 600 gram capacity is what sold me since. I mix for my sister also and need to be able to mix larger batches as I am on the road all the time.

I thought it would be good to post it here for anyone else looking for a quality scale at fire sale prices like I was. LOL.

I recently switched from mixing by volume to by weight. I have found it alot faster and more consistent, especially in sample volumes. I sample at 5mil, by volume it made measuring flavors slow to be accurate, and was harder to control variables. mixing by weight i find i can mix on the button and only change what i need to perfect the flavor I am after, then more accurately reproduce the final mix in larger volumes. i have a simple scale for now it is accurate to .01 gram but it can be slow to register.

This scale seems a good bit quicker and more accurate going to have seriously consider upgrading.

This has been an interesting read! My DIY hardware is already on the way... but the thing I was concerned about, for the future, about mixing larger quantities, was the total weight and the cheap scales at ebay, 300g x .01g.

Using yo han's blog post at http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/blogs/yo-han/5060-my-way-mixing-scale.html

VG: 1.261 g/ml has the most weight, so for a 300g scale and using 1.2g/ml as a round figure for all ingredients, and using a "weightless" bottle, you could make a 250 ml batch - 300/1.2, right?

So my question is, in reality, what's the largest batch any of you have made? With what scale? Someone earlier said they make 60 ml bottles.
