My avatar is my beloved GSD named Hannah. She comes from a champion line which means exactly nothing to me. My priorities when it comes to German Shepherds is OFA excellent hips. Her line has a great track record when it comes to hips. She is a Long Haired...but this breeder is pretty serious about his dogs. He made us promise "Belle" would be in her name for AKC registration. I said "No problem." After some serious thought, it hit me.

Meet "Hannah Belle Lechter". I thought it was brilliant. The breeder, on the other hand....well, let's just say he wasn't as impressed with my creativity as I was.

edited in case it's missed...there's a Silence of the Lambs reference in that name.

My GS was named Zeus.

He and his brother Bear from the same litter were bred from a dog fighter.

I think he got caught and they were rescues. Dunno, I was young.

BUT he definitely chose me when I was about 6 yrs old.

There were 4 people who could even be in his presence. And no other animals.

My mother and my brothers father both had to exhibit alpha and beta behavior to be in his presence. My step dad almost met his maker more than once just cleaning the yard or feeding him.

But it was known in our neighborhood (now known as the badlands) not to go past our yard in the alley.

Every person who tried nearly died. First was a drug dealer that ripped a few people off and was running from the cops. Then was a ...... that took her johns money and ran.

She got ripped to shreds. Skin completely torn off from her shoulder to her wrist in one bite.

Good thing for her my mother was an amazing nurse. By the time first responders got there she was nearly completely stitched up and the bleeding was nearly contained. She'd have died otherwise.

But there was this neighbor 2 doors down. She was our dog sitter. June I think was her name.

When her or I was with him, he was a big puppy. Could take food out of his bowl, play fetch, tug of war, cuddle, etc. Gentle as can be.

The strangest thing.

I never loved another dog the same. It's been at least 27 years.

But naps. I love them.
I regularly sneak off for a nap.

I like to call them 'power naps'. It makes them seem less to do with ageing and more about revitalising.

Laughs, I like the terms like "power nap" or "50 is the new 30" used to make people feel better. I'll tell you some days 72 feel like the new 90.

I like talking to fellow vapers, even if it's not about vaping. The one vaping friend I had just quit vaping because she's in a new relationship and that person doesn't "like" vaping (whatever!!!!). Also, i enjoy being part of this community but am only a regular on a few threads...as I thought you kind of had to be invited or have the particular device that's being discussed!

Not only do you not need to own the device, you don't even need to have a clue as I will demonstrate here shortly.

My GSD is in my avatar. He's brilliant and my best pal. This week when I was out of town, he stayed by the front door for 5 days waiting for me to come home. The smartest dog I've ever met in person. We got him from a rescue with papers, which is unusual. His father was a double grand champion and his mom was a grand champion which I think is cool only in that how often do you find that in a rescue. He steals pizza and figures out how to open doors when he isn't managing the security around the house. His predecessor, Bear, had no clue he was a GSD but his bark was enough to keep most people way. Before that, we had a rescue GSD named Sam. He was 75 lbs of Alpha bad@ss. Saved me from some gang bangers once. Alphas are great pets for a person but not so great with a family. GSD's are the best all round dogs ever.

I couldn't agree more...they are unbelievable. Hannah's greatest trick is getting her own ice. She hits the lever on the freezer door and catches the ice when it comes out. What's a few scratches on the freezer door? Totally worth it. I've had GSD's for about the last 20 years. When I was younger and had a bit more time, I did Schutzhund with Max. He was Alpha and extremely intelligent. It's amazing what those dogs can do. It's funny, they make you forget what other dogs are like. We rescued a Black Lab...Mandy. Mandy showed up fully trained and she's an incredible frisbee dog. I forgot what "normal" dogs are like. My Shepherds always were, to some level, on duty. They lie on the floor facing away from you...usually facing entrances and doors...you know, just in case:?:. Mandy, on the other hand, couldn't care less who's breaking into the house. She lies in your lap, licks your face and puts her frisbee on your knee....staring at me. Staring with that "you know you want to throw this for me" face. She lives to play and look at me like I'm a god. Hannah, Max and the rest of the GSD's always looked at me like 'I got your back but make sure dinner is on time. 5:30 sharp, because I have to go guard something...'
I love dogs.

Never had a GS but a good friend did. The GS was a rescue, and had the hip issues which happen in the breed. What a good girl. Easy to care for, and happy to just hang out with the other pups running around, even if she had trouble keeping up.

I only had one dog that tried to pull the alpha thing (Yeah, good luck with that one pup). He finally figured out when I was around not to try and play that card. He was totally protective of my daughter. She used to play "Lion" with him and stick her whole hand in his mouth. Anyone else would be missing most of that hand.

My last dog was a lab. What a sweet, friendly breed. Eager to please, totally undemanding (OK, she was a lab and yes, she was a Hoover for food, it's the breed, food is king) and never aggressive. OTOH she had one helluva bark. Anyone hearing it, including the cop who used to use my driveway to watch for stop sign runners, would pull back. Of course that just encouraged her to chase them, which freaked them out even more until she finally caught them and licked them to death. Some watch dog. If the bark didn't scare a thief off she would probably have given them a tour of the house and point out where all the expensive stuff is. Still a sweetie. And she never complained about my vaping. Bonus points on that one.

If I ever get another GSD I'm naming him Sir Poopsalot.

Speaking of which, it's time for me to go shovel out the back yard.
