three hours??? that is disgusting if so. The rspca have a lot to deal with and we should be thankful for them.( I know we are not talking about the RSPCA, but it came into my head... pre-senile with random thoughts sometimes) There are mega sh*t ppl in this world. I remember calling them out when a dog was found in a terrible state when I was dealing with something at work. They took this poor emaciated young dog away from people who said they had forgotten to feed it. We had the before pics and the rspca sent the after ones when it was well fed and cared for. The difference was astounding.

That was a book I read as a child that was based in the 1880's so I hope things have moved on since then.. although looking around the dogs home recently didn't exactly fill me with confidence!

It is always good to take a dog from a home. Some of them have had a terrible start. My male border collie was abused as a young pup. I had him from 5 months and I always felt he was grateful for it. He was such a joy to have. I may be fantasising though and he was just naturally good. Was certainly a switched on cookie anyway, but that is collies for you. They are very clever. Might think about a rescue collie seeing as I have had them before. They are not easy. Is like having a child. Very clever.

I remember my grandmother using mothballs under sinks or shove into holes where the mice may be coming in and out of. Apparently mice cant stand em and it will drive them off.


The people who owned my house before us said they've had mice problems and we saw 1 or 2 when we were moving in but none since. I believe they've all dissapeared because we have 3 ferrets. Ferrets skin oil supposedly alerts the mice of their presence since mice are natual prey to them.

Guess if we still had mice it wouldnt be too different than the zoo we have now. 2 cats, 3 ferrets, 3 dogs(American Bulldog, Presa Canario, and a Mini Daschshund), and 5 horses(4 quarter and an arabian)

I didn't know ferrets kept mice away.

I haven't had mice since I've lived with cats but before that I had to resort to poison. Not a nice thing to do but they breed so quickly they were starting to take over the house.

The poison is anti coagulant apparently, it stops blood from clotting and they die from internal bleeding.

I bought poison this afternoon. I hate doing it too, but have to do it for the same reasons and have no choice unless I want my house overtaken by the little blighters again.

I seem to remember something about mothballs too. Also, they hate something like mint, and people put fresh mint in cupboards etc to deter them. Not 100% sure it is mint, but I think so. They hate that too apparently.

yeah, poison works with mice because they cant vomit so once they ingest it, theres no way for it to be pushed out of the system before it is absorbed. Slow death but it works. Just nasty when they die in walls and under floors and you get that decay smell for a little while. light alot of candles lol.

Reign, I understand what you are saying, but I have suspended floors here with air grilles that allow airflow under the house. The house is detached and has solid walls with no cavities, so no decaying smell unless it dies somewhere else.

Just got up, went to the kitchen to find a little field mouse lying unconscious on the worktop and another, which I suppose must be in the same situation, actually still in the trap. The poison must be incredibly potent to have worked quite so fast. I feel terrible, but keep telling myself that there were at least two of them already and it wouldn't be long before there were fifty or more. Not sure what to do with them right now. Both still alive, I think. I can see the one on the worktop breathing, albeit slowly. I can't just chuck them in the bin alive, although having been poisoned, I guess that is what I need to do.

All you need to do is get a good cat. Never fails, mice will be gone in no time.

Ferrets are good for Snakes as well as Mice and other things.
They HATE snakes, anyone remember Riki Tiki Tavi? mongoose is a ferret too.
They even eat Cockroaches
