we have too much fun. it is so impromptu. just call out songs. I have cheat sheets for some cuz I never get a chance to play some of this stuff. the owners are genuinely nice people and they feed us well..

I did get pulled over by the police last sunday. got a 3 day suspension on my license for a warning (beer) but cop called next day and they dropped the suspension. it masde for 2 very long days because my car got impounded and I had to sleep on the drummers couch for a few hrs then head home. go to work the out and back the next morning and back for a 12 hr shift. haven't slept much since saturday night. so good night. gonna go sleep for about 8 hrs now and start getting ready for this weekend as of thursday.

^Nice, I was just pointed to this thread too. I get down with guitar, bass, synth, drums, and mpc/samplers. I typically just run a beat from the mpc to a simple loop pedal that uses SD cards. I put a bass line down with a synth or bass, and I typically store it simple-stupid like that and go over it when I actually play through the loops together with guitar. I have a hard time not using a wah pedal everytime...:)

Hey guys!
I am in fact a musician. (Sorry, I just found this thread) I play Drums, Guitar, Synthesizers, & Saxophone. I have had a few bands over the last 20+ years. I'm more of a weekend warrior producer nowadays.

Welcome, StrongBeard. You'll find this thread to be a good place to talk about anything music and a few other side topics.

Welcome to the thread, SuspectK. Lots of us have home studios and do much of what you described. It's nice to be able to lay down tracks and create your own mix CD or SIM card to play in the car. I have a Korg D3200 console and a music studio upstairs, too. I just don't use it enough!

Some singers benefit from a voice processor and some just use it to create a unique break over harmony. When it's used correctly, it fixes flats and sharps and smooths out the voice. Used as an effect, it can sound a little weird, like Peter Frampton and his talk box.

I can see how a single musician could create a great act with the proper use of this box.

I am thinking about getting one of these for live performance: TC-Helicon | VoiceLive 2 - Ultimate Vocal Harmony & Effects Pedal

Anyone worked with one?

Never have but my buddy Uncle Elvis in Bermuda uses one in the studio, and playing live. He performs live for a living, and is on itunes, etc.
He loves his.
Here is a video with his songs as the background music.

I will eventually get one. Currently, I am too busy paying off my second custom build.

I can deal with a microkorg, but I'd prefer if the original was in full sized keys. I ended up getting a R3 instead. It doesn't have a ton of knobs, but you're rarely even going to use all four that are available when you're not editing/tweaking sounds. The software that is available for the R3 is a big help for organizing and having what you want those controls to be. I typically set that first page of settings to my filters and/or effects.

I've been in a toss up between minimoog and the ms20, but I've decided on the ms20. The fact that I can patch in a stringed instrument to it is why I decided on it. If I had the money to spend on a voyager, I would, but the ms20 is about 1/3-1/4 the price.

I don't use the autotune on the vlt. I think of cher (do you believe...) when I hear it. too fake. I want to know if I am singing out of tune, just like missing notes on your instrument.... then you need to practice and get it.

I think of the harmonizer as an effect like for harmonies other members in the band can't hit (like the octave above in lager and ale, or that high harmony.... lets face it, some of us are old farts trying to do young man music haha)

Kimbra blows my mind with her use of modern tech....

Kimbra has a great jazz voice. I was impressed by her use of the pad for keys and her ability to manage the electronics while singing great vocals at the same time.

On the band video, I found the 2 and 4 click track (left hand of the "drummer") kind of annoying. I'd have him using some sort of snare patch instead of a rim shot. That, or I'd fade him into the mix.

It's amazing what electronic substitutes for traditional instruments are capable of, though. Our keyboardist uses a small, but high end 61 key Korg and you can close your eyes and envision real people playing real instruments. It's uncanny.

All up in your grill..
Well since my vocal style is metal and it's mostly monotone projection or screaming I doubt I'll be using the pitch correction or auto tune. But our new bassist doesn't do backing vocals and neither do any of the other players. So I am hoping to get some mileage out of the loop feature. It's either that or rewrite 10 of the songs where I am dependent on backing vocals. Also, some of the effects seem cool so they may get used for writing future songs and I also may try my hand at including some sampling using the mp3 patch in. I showed it to my wife and she bought it for me so it's on it's way. Can't wait to try it out. :)
