I don't know if this counts but thought I would chime in since I'm a music lover....

I took classical piano lessons for 10 years when I was a kid. I also sang in the church choir as an alto until my voice changed, then second bass in the choir and in high school and college. While in high school, I played violin, then viola, then double bass.

I currently still play piano, but had to learn to use the damper peddle with my left foot due to nerve damage. It took a while, but now feels natural. I improvise, and do a little writing, none of it very good, but I still like to do it.



My girlfriend and I love to watch youtube videos and sing together. She is a soprano, and harmonizes with me, and I with her.

Does any of that count?

Yes, it all counts! If you've ever played or even even been a roady you are welcome in this thread. Just enjoying talking about music and playing is all that's necessary.

I have most of my guitar collection on music stands upstairs in my man cave. I have several in cases, but didn't want to spend big bucks just to put them all in cases and music stands were much cheaper than hard cases or gig bags. The man cave is a large room between two bedrooms upstairs. It's my exercise room, music studio, and a general getaway place.

I have 8 electrics, two acoustics, two keyboards, and a bass guitar. There's also a 32 track studio that I don't use nearly enough. I also have a 200W Peavey PA system with stands and 2 15" cabs with horns for the mid high end.

There are no wrong notes

There are no wrong notes. To see what I mean, check this out:

1) If you play a wrong note, play it again so it sounds like you did it on purpose, and it will often sound like its tension-building rather than a bad note. That leads me to….

2) There is no wrong note, just the wrong note played after. Play a bad note and if you pick it up quickly enough, you can slide into the right note (see #4).

3) If you play a wrong note on purpose as a neighboring tone leading into the right note, it sounds good. It also sounds just like #2 above.

4) When playing in the standard modes, no matter what note you hit, if its a “wrong” note you are NEVER more than 1 fret away in EITHER direction from the right note. If you are quick enough and you hit the wrong note, you don’t have to think about where to go from there to make it right, just go SOMEWHERE. That of course leads into #3 and then #2.

5) If you are playing a CMajor chord, people, the music, your ears will tell you that a C# note clashes with the chord. However, if you play it an octave up, it doesn’t clash! Its just a b9 and sounds fine. Play a C#Maj chord with the root on the 5th string, and hit the note C# on that 5th or the 4th string and it clashes. Hit that C# on the 3rd string (an octave up) and the b9 (C#) doesn’t sound so bad. So, is it REALLY a wrong note, or is it the close interval? And if its the close interval, then why does the 3rd sound OK? So its not necessarily that either.

6) If you practice playing the wrong notes enough, they start to sound good.

7) If wrong notes are so bad, then why is it that even some more rock guys like Steve Morse make heavy use of them and they never sound bad? Bach

Just saw this thread!! I've been playing the drums since "Beginning Band" in the 5th grade. 1st chair marching band and concert band '91-'94, with a couple of basement bands after that. That usually ended up with us just hanging out drinking beer after 2 hours or so.

I got married a few years ago (2001) and the wife told me my set had to go... so I got rid of it after fighting for a week. About 2 months after that I got rid of her too!

Fast forward to a few months ago. My wife (new one!) Asked me what I wanted for Christmas. I said "...weeeelllll, you know what I really want? A new drum set!!" BTW she called me spineless for getting rid of my first one. Looking back I guess I deserved it! She himmed and hawed about it for a couple of weeks and two days ago I walk into the house to THIS!!!

Its a Yamaha Stage Custom with Zildjian and Sabian cymbals. A Gibraltar double bass pedal with a really nice China coming in the mail! A guy she works with was selling it and she snapped it up!! She even said let's keep it in the living room!! I LOVE it!! It feels and sounds great!!

I cant wait to start playing again! Its one of my favorite things to do! I'll be spending all weekend getting my bearings back as its been 12 years since I've sat behind a kit. I think I'll keep the wife too!

Hi guys!

I have been at it on and off since I was about 11, I am not counting banging on my grandparent's Steinway grand as a young'un Mostly a guitarist........ mostly. I was away from it for quite awhile but have been dabbling again for the last year or so.

I have an assortment of this and that, probably six or seven guitars and a bass or two at any given time, a few keyboards, two pianos, several amps and cabs etc. Have a few pedals, in fact in a moment of weakness I bought a Jamman last week, heh, it was like buying a friend! Also a 16 track Yamaha, sold the mighty Korg last year and have regretted it do to the fantastic drum section it had.

I like to pick up inexpensive guitars and beat them up with various files and such till they play well, and then sell or rehome them. Some of these have actually turned out very very well! Wish there was the selection, quality and price back when I was broke struggling kid. I still have the Strat I bought when I was about 20, it's going to the grave with me.

It's always a hard decision whether to trade in something to get something else. You never know if it's going to be valuable or worthless. The only guitar I regret trading is the '66 model Cherry Red Mosrite. They are worth from $3k up to $5K these days. I bought mine new while working after school at a music store in the late 60s.

I played cornet in a local brass band until nine months ago, ill health has me stepped down for awhile.

I also sometimes help out at church - The Salvation Army - when they need me to.

I sing too. Alto in a choir or harmony group. But also sing the occasional solo.

I'd had enough beer to sit behind the kit. The look on my girlfriend's face was funny... she took the video on her phone... That song came off as one that the audience requested and the guitar player didn't really want to do it, but did to satisfy the crowd! Been there before ...
