My first wooden mech mod

Sorry for the sideways pictures. I uploaded from my phone and now I can't figure out why they ended up sideways. I gave up messing around with them.

Anyways, the wood is Sapele and the metal top and bottom is aluminum. I was originally going with brass but had some aluminum on hand to use on my first mod. The original switch was much smaller therefore would have been a bit further away from the atomizer. But upon testing the switch out I found it not to be reliable and had to find another switch. I would love to come up with a purely mechanical switch similar to the one used on the Touchwood mod (my inspiration) but just could figure the logistics of it out. I still am trying to think my way through incorporating a mechanical switch while still getting a good electrical contact.

Any comments good or bad would be highly appreciated.

Looks splendid. In guessing in touchwood tradition there is just a switch and wiring in the second compartment. Your sapele looks to be a nice even brown wood color. I did one once and all of the visible grain wound up on the ends of the mod, covered by the end caps. Is yours like this?

The end caps are on the end grain of the mod and the face grain is all quatersawn grain. The grain looks better in person but in general I am not that happy with the choice in wood for this mod. I started using cherry and ended up scrapping that piece as the final shape was far too bulky. My next mod is going to use some birds eye maple I have laying around. The sapele was a little easier to work with so went with it for my first mod. But the grain did end up slightly muddied up.

And asdaq is right on (since he is highly experienced in mod making) that this uses a single 18650 on the atomizer side and the switch and wiring is on the the other side.

Nice mod there. I made two mechanical switches today. If your interested I'll put a couple pics in your thread of them. I'll snap a couple of shots tomorrow when the light is better. Keith

I would love to see some pics of your mechanical switches. For whatever reason I have a hard time visualizing all these parts working together inside the switch tube. Touchwood mods used to use a wired switch similar to the one I'm using but his newest mods are purely mechanical.

When I get a bit more time I will break this thing down and post some more pictures. I will try and break out the regular camera and upload the pics that way instead of using the phone. I'm not real experienced with this forums picture upload format. Not sure why the first picture can't be enlarged like the second one I posted.

Thanks for the kind words. Those were pretty much my thoughts on sapele too. I had higher hopes and in the end it came out brown and wood, but I blame myself for not working with the wood the right way. The maple sounds great, it's a favorite of mine. I have a cherry mod almost ready to go, hopefully in the next couple of days, it has some nice surprises in it that I could see once the oil was applied.

The touchwood came out before the DNA, but if the switch area is 3/4", it seems that one would fit in there, but it would change the whole aesthetic.

I guess I'm a little confused on what you mean by the 3/4" switch area. What switch are you talking about fitting in that area? I am very open to new switch ideas although I am so far very happy with the switch I used. It was very cheap and surprisingly made it to my doorstep up here in Maine from China in a relatively short time. But again it is a wired switch and I would love to come up with a mechanical design similar to Touchwood's most recent mods.

I would some day love to own my own Touchwood. I certainly don't want to make an exact copy of his mod but admit that a lot of my inspiration started after seeing pictures of Touchwood. Then I found this place and was introduced to some of the amazing work going on here. Between Asdaq and Bapgood I had all the inspiration I needed and knew I had to make my own. Some day I hope to produce the quality of work these guys are. If I had the $ I would hit up both asdaq and bapgood for one of their beautiful mods.

Well I just might be assuming too much. Does the space below the switch run all the way through and have a 3/4" diameter like the battery hole does? Down in there is where I had in mind.

Your assumption is right on the money. It is a 3/4" hole. I would absolutely love to have a DNA chip in a device that I made but where on earth can you pick one up? They seem to be non existent.

Finding one is tricky, there is the Yihi board too, but it is rather expensive and I'm not sure it is small enough to fit in such a space. How long/deep is your switch right now? With the DNA you'd need to worry about the up down buttons as well as the screen, and it would affect how you can wrap your hand around it. If you could keep the switch as you have it and mount the the buttons recessed in the bottom plate (like bap did) with just a thin slit for the window that would be a sweet device.

If the Yihi fits, it is tilt adjusted so it doesn't need to look like a wooden vamo if you know what I mean.

edit: the Yihi is too big, here bap:

We'll since I have your attention asdaq I might as well hit you with some questions that you've probably answered a thousand times already. Just haven't the time to wade through it all.

First question is about your magnetic switch. Do you have any good visual diagrams and/or pics of it taken apart describing how it works? I've seen one post of yours where you explained it but still didn't grasp the idea all that well for whatever reason.

Next question is about your atomizers. I haven't searched those details out but am thoroughly impressed you're making your own. I would love for you to point me in the right direction for getting started building those.

Sorry to bombard with these questions but as I've stated before you are one of my biggest influences on making my own mods. I'm a hobbiest hand tool woodworker, electrical and automation maintenance tech, as well as a recent vaper therefore knew this was the next path to take for an interesting hobby.

Sure it is interesting, for some to near obsession-- definitely not me.

The atty is post #7 here:

http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/modding-forum/517640-30-penny-pipe.html

And the switch is #98 here, and a couple of posts before with some description:

http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/modding-forum/443856-some-wood-mods-3.html

Also, Karltinsly did a nice job of the switch here:

If there's any detail left out, just ask.

Well I just went over your post about how to make that mech switch and I see why I still haven't made one of my own. I mean that is some serious ingenuity right there asdaq. It must've taken you a while to find the right combination of parts. Where did you come up with the presta tube valve idea? And to find all these mating parts to work together with the presta tube pieces is amazing asdaq. If you didn't live in Poland I'd ask to buy one of these rigs.

It sounds like you're gathering these parts from different local suppliers in your area? How can I get my hands on these parts?
