My next one will definitely use an 18350 (1200mAh). I have thought about making an 18650 one too, but it looses the 'tiny' aspect when you build around an 18650.

I can make one though. I'm just reluctant to start selling anything until I'm sure that that's what I want to do. I don't want to be pigeon-holed into supplier status if I'm only going to sell a handful of items. And it seems like lately on the forum, the mere talk of selling gets you the 'unregistered supplier' status.

I just studied this again...and it may not work with the 18650...so i shall concede... However...put me on the list...i still want one !!

Edit because i just read your post. Yep..it might take away from the " tiny size"..any ways...i would be interested in any of the ones you make...and i understand the supplier status thing...so, just keep us in mind in case you do ever start making a few extra. Very nice job !

You could always make a few for "giving away" and take gratuity in turn ;) I could also see this as a partial DIY mod where you don't paint them, letting the other people paint them how ever they want to, and save yourself a lot of extra time...just a thought anyway. I like them very much, they remind me of the size of a small zippo lighter... very nice work indeed.

Well I have ordered some stuff to make my own mold and build these using a polymer resin. We'll see how that goes

I see big, sticky messes and lots of cussing in my near future :p

HP
Have you ordered RTV (Room Temperature Vulcanisation) to make a rubber mold.
If so I may be able to point you in the right direction with a few tips.

Yup, that's what I got. The part I'm wrestling with now is where to split the unit. I can either cut it down the vertical center line and mold it in two halves. (difficult multi part mold) or I can mold it in two pieces with a 'bottom' (flat) piece and a 'body' piece (with the two tubes in it).

I think the way I want to design the button, I am going to have to make it a split down the vertical center line though. I just need to research the multi-side molding methods that I will need to pull that off.

It's definitely going to be a complicated project to take on, but I love taking complicated problems and devising simple solutions for them, so it should be fun.

I really like the design Highping but like Clumsy I am a bit obsessed with the 18650. The smaller one 18350 is ok in my Lil Chuck but I really love the 18650. I am very interested in one of these and will be following along to see how it goes. Love watching smart people work :)

I will be making something with the 18650, but I figure if you are going to have all that height, you might as well stick a juice bottle under the atty, so you will need to follow my JB thread for developments with the 18650 batts.

Although I may end up trying to make one of these with the 18650 just to see how it turns out. I'm pretty sure I could still make it smaller than any other 18650 mod available now. IMO, there seems to be a lot of wasted space in all the commercial mods being made.

Take a look at this.
If found it helped me, on a project I worked on 2 Years ago.
YouTube - Mold Making - Mass Casting Complex Parts (w/ parting line)

If you don't have a vacuum degassing box.
Try this
Mix the rtv
Place a empty container on the floor
Then very slowly pour the rtv into the floored container from a height of about 1.5m
By the time the rtv hits the floored container, it will be a very thin stream.
forcing out any excess air.
I found this helped in removing bubbles in the finished mold.

I also believe, splitting your mold down the middle is the best way to go.

Be prepared to make several molds before it comes out just how you want it.
I suggest using dental plaster for casting until you get the perfect mold.
You can cast a piece, de-mold and bake hard within 30mins.
And its a great deal cheaper than polymer resin, when first building a new mold.

Hope this helps......

Thanks Peter. I watched that exact video last night.
The RTV I got claims that degassing is not necessary, but I guess I'll find out. (the hard way probably). If I see problems with it on the first one I'll give your method a shot and see if it helps.

I've already spent about a hundred bucks on the stuff to get started, but I'm guessing I'll be on order #5 (and several hundred more dollars) by the time I get it all figured out. It's something I have been wanting to learn how to do though, so it will be worth it in the end.

Probably a dumb question b/c I'm missing something obvious but...

Could you make 2 molds and thus have no cutting/splitting? One outside mold that the material's poured into and then another piece (call it the inside mold) that is inserted to take up the desired final void space (basically 2 solid pipes spaced correctly). Don't know if I described it right?

Good point Mike, but may be difficult to install battery connector and wiring.
(Not sure).

I do know that you have been playing on photoshop again.
Quality Avatar BTW.
