I have a question.

A friend posed this to me, and it has been the point of much discussion.

How do you measure the benefits of vaping?

How can you quantify "feeling better" or "cigarette equivalence" to my non-vaper friend whose Mum is dying of emphysema and switched to vaping instead of smoking. He wants to know "How do I know how much she hasn't smoked or the equivalent in vapes in cigarettes that she would have smoked?" What is the measure? How do you enable people to give up and measure the benefits?

Comparing vaping to smoking is like comparing apples to oranges. You get none of the bad stuff from cigarettes when you vape and nicotine is actually medically comparable to caffeine. The damage from smoking is not reversible but your friend can know his mum isnt doing any more damage if she doesnt smoke anymore and will see some improvement in lung function from not smoking anymore.

Um, how much she hasn't smoked? What was her usual rate per day, and how many days has she NOT smoked that many?

Some of the damage from smoking WILL be reversed, over time. Might be a long time, but.... that's one of the reasons to quit, along with, of course, not doing more damage. For me, about a week after becoming exclusively a vaper, I noticed my morning chest rattle was gone.

While there are, of course, no long term studies of the effects of vaping, the research that's been done strongly suggests that worst case, vaping is 1 - 5 % as harmful as smoking. Which does not, of course, say that vaping is "safe", but it does show that it's nearly two orders of magnitude less harmful. If viewed as "harm reduction", it's a clear winner.
