I think many confuse "ashy" with "smoky."
I feel this whole "ash" thing has run amok. When people used that term in reference to tobacco eliquid, it was always tobacco absolute as the culprit. Now, I feel, people are using that term when they vape/taste a natural tobacco in under-performing hardware. What happens when some NETs are not used with an adequate liquid delivery system? Quick build-up, resulting in a heating of said build-up, which produces what? Ash taste. It's, IMO, not the liquid necessarily that taste like ash, but the the vaping of its build-up. Done.

I agree that that's often the case. However, when I first tried Blue Grass Burley, ash did come to mind. It was my first experience with a STRONG authentic tobacco vape, and now I wouldn't describe any ashy note in it, but that's where my mind went at the time. I can kind of see how the smoky element of Latakia or other fire cured NETs may translate as ash to some.
But yes, now when I start to taste ash, it means my coil is gunked up and needs to be cleaned and burned. That specific taste, which is the first sign to change drippers for me, is definately ash and I haven't gotten that specific ashy taste from any NET on a clean coil.

Yeah, roger that! My issue, and I am not saying this was your situation, is that the adjective "ash" has been spoken about in eliquid for so long that people's brains have been primed for it. But that priming was for what to expect when dealing with absolutes, not straight NETs. I think since so many are new to NETs, as you point out, "smoky" is the term that best describes some of them in question, but "ash" is in hand. That tastes ashy! Or, no, I mean it tastes smoky. Short of it not being a conflation of similar, albeit, not totally synonymous descriptors, it's an issue with coils.
Clean coils + TA = ash.
Clean coils + (straight) NEts = tobacco (although, not burning tobacco)

I've yet to have one of the straight TA juices, though I have had juices that may contain TA. Is an ashy flavor a result of the process to make TA or is it just the commercial TA that is ashy. My next tobacco order planned is from VelvetCloudVaper who I guess makes their own TA; is that going to have an ashy note?

Yes and no (it's there, but not in the way as it is with the commercial variety). If you want to taste it, well, holler at Mom and Pop or Paul at Moondrop.co. Frankly, if done right, man, it's great. I got to have a couple TA juices in my stash at all times.
Yep, M&P are on my queue. Tobacco Haze is the straight up TA right? I also have Conspiracy, RYO, and RYO4 listed to order from them.

Sorry, I hadn't seen this when I made my long drawn out post about the same thing you put so succinctly.
I am on it. You will. Seriously, I sent the homie TCP, and the the no-longer-posting, Skinniepost some straight TA juices so they could see for themselves how fat that ash was.LOL
It's been a Vita Bella kind of night...
Been savoring some 3 month old VB in a Protank on my ProVari (recently liberated from Luigi at GeJ) and it's just delectable. Gone through almost 3 ml. in the past 2 hours alone whilst sipping on some Gentleman Jack.
Life is good sometimes...
Which did you liberate from Luigi: the Provari, the Protank, or the VB?![]()
Yep, Patriot plays as a cig, cigar, or pipe tobacco depending on the person. For me it's too complex to be cig. Maybe cigar if I stretch my imagination, but mainly straight-up pipe. Fairly dry, little bit of sweetness, and layers of tobacco flavor.

I also disagree. I also submit that BS tastes more like American spirit and in a purer. More succinct form. There has always been something about Patriot that at the very last second of a vape bothers me. It is almost...an artificiality. I cnt lit my finger on it but I know it is there. There is some element that on a minuscule level knocks it authenticity down for me. Something isn't right, something very small, but something. The princess and the pea. Big Spirit succeeds in all the very subtle, nuanced ways Patriot does not...plus it performs just as well and tastes better. My first reaction was: this is why patriot is going for...that there is a purity of extract, a cleanness here, a REALNESS that Patriot just misses...and that this is what a ciggie shkd taste like. If you ever wondered if you TRULYike the taste of good analog ciggie blends or justices the nix and/or smoke...try this juice. I love clean fresh unfettered tobacco and I love this stuff for what it is.
I disagree, and I submit to you a fine example of dating and tobacco mixing together swimmingly...
